Position Overview

Chief Executive Officer (remote)

The realm of scientific inquiry and ongoing medical education is vital for ensuring that anesthesiologists, intensivists, and pain management specialists stay at the cutting edge of medical knowledge and patient care, significantly influencing health outcomes across various clinical settings. With a global membership of 7,000, the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) is dedicated exclusively to research and education, aiming to generate and disseminate groundbreaking advancements in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while supporting scientists worldwide.

As the Chief Executive Officer, you will report to and advise the Board of Trustees, managing an annual budget of $5 million alongside investments totaling $28 million. Your leadership will be crucial in maintaining IARS's financial stability in a dynamic healthcare environment while upholding our research-centric mission. Our goal is to spearhead the global anesthesiology community in advancing medical science and practice; IARS allocates over $700,000 each year to support anesthesia research, which distinguishes us from other organizations that engage in lobbying or product sales.

Leading a proficient remote team of eight, you will shape IARS's strategic vision, oversee administrative functions, and drive significant growth. As we empower the global anesthesia community through innovative research initiatives and funding, education, and outreach, you will be tasked with forging new strategic alliances and nurturing existing partnerships with organizations such as ASA, AUA, FAER, WFSA, and FDA. Internally, you will guide staff in executing the Board's vision across all facets of the Society, including meetings and educational events, research grants, awards, and programs, as well as marketing, membership, and publishing endeavors, including Anesthesia & Analgesia, the premier clinical journal in the field. This journal serves as the Society's primary revenue source and is essential for delivering value to our members and the scientific community. You will collaborate closely with the Publications Director and engage with the Editor in Chief, Editorial Board, and commercial journal publisher to ensure its ongoing success. Across all departments, you will establish a cohesive strategy for directing and promoting research to advance the field and support scientists globally.

Impact of Your Role

Your contributions will enhance the Society's global influence as we promote research, advocate for anesthesia as a fundamental element of perioperative medicine, and engage and support the next generation of researchers and clinicians both domestically and internationally.

  • Financial Oversight and Revenue Generation: Strengthen the organization's financial health by evaluating all facets of the business model and managing finances to mitigate risks, including upcoming contract renewals and membership models. Investigate non-dues revenue opportunities, such as industry sponsorships, and oversee all financial operations, including reporting, audits, and investments.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with the Board to establish and implement a strategic vision that aligns IARS's current position with its future direction, enhancing collaboration and resource sharing within the global anesthesia community.
  • Member Engagement: Enhance our membership model to meet the evolving needs of current and prospective members. Consider redefining our value proposition to attract a wider audience, including early- and mid-career clinicians and researchers worldwide.
  • Annual Meeting Development: Envision the future of IARS's Annual Meeting and other educational activities to increase revenue and participant value while delivering high-quality scientific content that propels research and practice forward.
  • Leadership and Operations: Support the professional staff and leverage their expertise for strategic decision-making. Assess the organizational structure to maximize productivity and value while fostering a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Governance and Board Engagement: Evaluate the Board and staff structure to optimize volunteer contributions and embrace technology where appropriate. Monitor external trends, identify challenges, and distill information into focused agendas to facilitate effective discussions and decision-making.

Work Environment, Compensation, and Benefits

  • Enjoy a fully remote work environment with occasional travel for meetings.
  • The anticipated total cash compensation range is $300,000 - $399,000, commensurate with prior executive experience and relevant qualifications, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous paid time off, medical, dental, and vision coverage, disability and life insurance, and a 403(b) plan with a 10% employer contribution.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a chief staff executive in a similar organization, with over 10 years of association management experience in a medical or healthcare-related field. CAE and/or IOM credentials are advantageous.
  • Direct knowledge and experience with continuing medical education (CME) and ACCME requirements.
  • An advanced degree in business, public administration, nonprofit management, law, or a related field is preferred.

About the Organization

The International Anesthesia Research Society is a nonpolitical, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit medical society established in 1922 to advance and support scientific research and education related to anesthesia, ultimately improving patient care through research. The IARS invests over $700,000 annually in anesthesia research and provides a platform for anesthesiology leaders to exchange information and ideas. The Society maintains a global membership of physicians and health professionals in anesthesia-related fields and sponsors various educational initiatives.
