Full-Time Position - Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator

Department of Public Works - Wastewater Treatment Facility

POSITION SUMMARY

This role entails skilled responsibilities associated with the management and upkeep of vital machinery within the City of Bay City's Wastewater Treatment Facility. Key tasks include monitoring operational conditions, collecting and analyzing samples, maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, adjusting control systems, operating dewatering machinery, performing preventative maintenance, and overseeing building and grounds upkeep.

Work is conducted under general supervision, with routine tasks executed independently. Performance is assessed through record analysis, completed tasks, and direct observation of work outcomes.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate emergency generators at the wastewater treatment facility.
  • Monitor and document equipment readings to ensure efficient facility operations.
  • Adjust wastewater machinery for optimal performance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of valves, pumps, gauges, and other essential equipment.
  • Maintain the Vactor Pad.
  • Collect samples throughout the treatment process for laboratory analysis, including pH, BOD, and bacteriological tests, ensuring accurate documentation of results.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, including lubrication and oil changes.
  • Assist with repairs on wastewater equipment.
  • Operate and maintain wastewater processes and safety equipment as necessary.
  • Manage facility grounds, including cleaning, painting, mowing, and minor landscaping tasks.
  • Execute snow removal and salt spreading as required.
  • Transport special orders and supplies as needed.
  • Support the preparation of records and reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with principles and practices of wastewater treatment operations.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to the role.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Willingness to be on call during regular work hours, including weekends, and respond to after-hours needs.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends.
  • Capable of reading meters and gauges accurately.
  • Quickly and competently make necessary adjustments in wastewater operations.
  • Proficient in mathematical calculations with accuracy and speed.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
  • Capability to wear respirators and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, and work in confined spaces and at various heights.
  • Ability to collect samples and conduct standard laboratory tests.
  • Work effectively under pressure and time constraints.
  • Function independently and collaboratively to meet daily operational deadlines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Relevant experience in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance.
  • Basic computer skills for working with maintenance software and email.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
