Full-Time Position - Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator

Department of Public Works - Wastewater Treatment Division

Position Summary
This role entails skilled responsibilities associated with the operation and upkeep of critical machinery within the Wastewater Treatment Facility of Bay City. Key tasks include monitoring operational conditions, collecting and analyzing samples, maintaining documentation, preparing reports, adjusting controls, operating dewatering systems, performing preventative maintenance, and conducting general maintenance of facilities and grounds.

Employees receive general oral and written instructions from supervisors, while routine tasks are performed independently. Performance is assessed through record analysis, completed tasks, and observation of work progress and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate emergency generators at the wastewater treatment facility.
  • Monitor and document equipment readings to ensure efficient plant operations.
  • Make necessary adjustments to wastewater equipment for optimal functionality.
  • Regularly inspect valves, pumps, gauges, and other equipment.
  • Maintain the Vactor Pad.
  • Collect samples from various points in the treatment system for laboratory analysis, including pH and bacteriological tests, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as lubrication and oil changes.
  • Assist with repairs of wastewater equipment.
  • Operate and maintain safety and wastewater processing equipment as required.
  • Maintain facility grounds through cleaning, painting, mowing, and minor landscaping.
  • Conduct snow removal and salt spreading as necessary.
  • Transport special orders and supplies as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and records.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of wastewater treatment principles and practices.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.

Skills and Abilities

  • Availability for on-call duties during the workweek, including weekends.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and on a relief basis as required.
  • Proficient in reading meters and gauges accurately.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to operational adjustments.
  • Strong mathematical skills for accurate calculations.
  • Capability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at various heights, wearing necessary safety equipment.
  • Competence in sample collection and conducting standard laboratory tests.
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure and time constraints.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet operational deadlines.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Basic computer skills for maintenance software and communication.
  • Valid driver's license.
