Position Overview

Are you dedicated to making a meaningful impact in communities through advocacy?

The State & Local Advocacy Officer will be instrumental in spearheading Global Refuge's initiatives at the state and local levels, focusing on the promotion of the rights and dignified treatment of immigrants and refugees while countering adverse state-level actions. This role involves representing Global Refuge in various coalitions and community engagements, while also providing support to network partners and affiliates in their advocacy efforts related to migration policies.

This role offers the flexibility of remote work, with occasional travel as necessary.

Global Refuge, previously known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), is a nonprofit organization committed to assisting newcomers in their pursuit of safety and the American dream. Since its inception in 1939, Global Refuge has welcomed individuals seeking refuge, demonstrating a legacy of compassion and support for those in crisis. Our comprehensive services include refugee resettlement, economic empowerment, and family reunification, having positively impacted over 750,000 individuals globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive Global Refuge's advocacy priorities at the state and local levels by offering strategic and technical assistance to various stakeholders, including advocates, affiliates, and community organizers.
  • Evaluate and address the needs of partner agencies and affiliates, providing necessary support through legal and public policy analysis, training sessions, and resource sharing.
  • Conduct research on legal and policy matters affecting the integration of immigrants and refugees.
  • Facilitate collaboration among diverse stakeholders to build a robust advocacy infrastructure.
  • Create educational materials on state immigration issues to support advocacy efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Mobilization team to engage stakeholders in policy initiatives.
  • Integrate state and local legislative initiatives into broader national advocacy strategies.
  • Assist in developing a multi-state strategy to promote positive integration efforts.
  • Prepare materials for dissemination to affiliates and local partners.
  • Represent Global Refuge in various public forums and events.
  • Support the advocacy team in advancing the rights of immigrants and refugees.
  • Organize relevant policy events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to Global Refuge's mission and values, with the ability to foster relationships with colleagues and partners.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree in communications or a law degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in immigration law and policy, with at least one year in state/local advocacy or community organizing.
  • Demonstrated experience working with state legislatures.
  • Familiarity with multi-media platforms is essential.
  • Experience with faith-based organizations is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Quorum and/or Salesforce is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
