With a robust network of 1.2 million members and over 100 local groups across various states, we engage with millions online each month. UWD is recognized nationally for its dynamic approach to advocacy, appearing in major media outlets and leading efforts to amplify the voices of undocumented immigrant youth. We prioritize the needs of our members, having trained thousands and supported numerous local initiatives, making us a pivotal force in the immigrant rights movement.
Internship Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic State/Local Advocacy Intern to join our team. Collaborating closely with the Texas Advocacy Manager, the intern will engage in research, development, and execution of advocacy campaigns aimed at enhancing protections for immigrants against deportation and detention. The role will also involve advocating for policies that expand access to essential services for immigrants and work towards ending family separations due to deportation.
The ideal candidate will share a passion for UWD's mission and possess the motivation to thrive in a fast-paced environment. They should be reliable, capable of managing multiple tasks, and committed to meeting deadlines while collaborating effectively across teams. This internship is remote and part-time, with multilingual skills considered an asset.
Compensation
This is a paid internship, offering a stipend of $20 per hour, with an expected commitment of 15 hours per week for a duration of 8 weeks. The work schedule will be coordinated with the supervisor.
Learning Opportunities
Interns will have access to professional development workshops and educational experiences designed to enhance their skills and knowledge. Key learning areas include:

Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the implementation of local advocacy campaigns, supporting the Texas Advocacy Manager in research and planning.
- Create educational materials, including policy explainers and public statements.
- Help develop strategic partnerships by attending meetings with local organizations and elected officials.
- Conduct research for team projects, maintaining databases on relevant legislation and immigration news.
- Represent the advocacy team in meetings and build relationships with team members.
Qualifications
- Basic understanding of immigration issues, with prior experience preferred.
- Interest in creating educational content.
- Strong communication skills, with proficiency in English; Spanish is a plus.
- Ability to manage stress and deadlines effectively.
- Familiarity with digital collaboration tools.
Cultural Competency
- Deep understanding of the immigrant experience and related social dynamics.
- Awareness of intersectionality concerning race, gender, and identity.
- Ability to foster trust and build relationships across diverse identities.
