Position Overview

The State & Local Advocacy Officer will oversee Global Refuge's initiatives at the state and local levels, focusing on enhancing the rights and dignified treatment of immigrants and refugees while addressing adverse state-level policies. This role involves representing Global Refuge in various coalitions and community engagements, as well as providing support to network partners and affiliates in their advocacy efforts related to migration policies.

This role offers the flexibility of remote work, with occasional travel as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the advancement of Global Refuge's advocacy priorities at the state and local levels by providing strategic support to advocates, affiliates, and community organizers.
  • Evaluate and address the needs of partner agencies and affiliates, offering legal and public policy analysis, training, and best practices.
  • Conduct research on legal and policy issues affecting the integration of immigrants and refugees.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders to build advocacy infrastructure at the state and local levels.
  • Create educational materials on state immigration issues and support the development of advocacy strategies.
  • Engage with the Global Refuge Mobilization team to identify stakeholders for policy initiatives.
  • Work with the Advocacy and Policy team to align state and local initiatives with national strategies.
  • Assist in developing a multi-state strategy to promote positive integration and counteract negative policies.
  • Prepare materials for dissemination to affiliates and local partners.
  • Represent Global Refuge in various state and local events.
  • Coordinate with the advocacy team to promote the rights of immigrants and refugees.
  • Organize relevant policy events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to Global Refuge's mission and values, with the ability to foster relationships with colleagues and partners.
  • Bachelor's degree required; a master's degree in communications or law is preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in immigration law and policy, with at least one year in state/local advocacy or community organizing.
  • Experience working with state legislatures and familiarity with legislative processes.
  • Proficiency in multimedia platforms and experience with faith-based organizations is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with Quorum and/or Salesforce is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary for the role.
