Position Overview

Make the Road New York (MRNY) empowers immigrant and working-class communities to attain dignity and justice through advocacy, policy reform, educational initiatives, and essential services. Operating community centers across various locations, MRNY serves a diverse membership of 25,000 individuals, addressing critical issues such as workplace rights, housing justice, immigrant rights, civil liberties, TGNCIQ advocacy, public education, healthcare access, and immigration reform.

Current Opportunity:

The Senior Immigration Counsel will manage a dynamic caseload of immigration matters, including cases in removal proceedings and those involving intricate criminal histories. This role involves supervising a dedicated team of at least three legal professionals, including attorneys and paralegals, who are authorized to represent clients. The Senior Counsel will coordinate with other members of the Legal Department and collaborate on various legal initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a team of at least three full-time employees in the immigration sector, ensuring high-quality legal services and fostering professional development.
  • Provide tailored assistance to clients facing removal proceedings or seeking immigration relief across various categories, including SIJS, Asylum, U/T visas, and cancellation of removal.
  • Advocate for immigrants with complex legal challenges stemming from criminal records and other factors.
  • Conduct educational workshops to inform immigrant communities about their rights and immigration-related issues.
  • Support MRNY members and advocacy campaigns through strategic litigation, legislative efforts, and research.
  • Facilitate team meetings and contribute to legal department discussions.
  • Manage key immigration grants and assist with grant reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an FDA-approved vaccine prior to the start of employment.
  • Possess a law degree (e.g., J.D.) and a valid license to practice law in New York State.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in immigration law is required.
  • Strong managerial, organizational, writing, and communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Preferred knowledge of immigration law and removal defense litigation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with populations that reflect MRNY's membership, including documented and undocumented immigrants, individuals facing domestic violence, members of TGNCIQ communities, and youth.
  • A commitment to collaborative work is essential.

  • Relevant lived experience, particularly within low-income immigrant communities, is valued.

Compensation and Benefits:

The starting salary is determined by a scale established by a democratically-elected personnel committee, influenced by experience and educational background. MRNY offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, a 401K plan, and generous paid time off.
