Senior Immigration Counsel

Make the Road New York (MRNY) empowers immigrant and working-class communities to attain dignity and justice through advocacy, policy reform, transformative education, and essential services. Operating community centers across various locations, MRNY serves a diverse membership of 25,000 individuals, addressing critical issues such as workplace justice, tenants' rights, immigrant rights, civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, healthcare access, and immigration reform.
As a multi-faceted organization, MRNY engages member-led committees to devise strategies for common challenges while fostering leadership and civic participation. We provide a range of high-quality bilingual services, including English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and youth programs. Our legal program offers direct representation in various practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing, benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights, alongside impact litigation to drive systemic change.
Current Opportunity:
The Senior Immigration Counsel will manage a diverse portfolio of immigration cases, including those in removal proceedings and complex criminal matters. This role involves supervising a team of at least three legal professionals, including attorneys and paralegals authorized to represent clients. The Senior Counsel will coordinate with other legal department members and oversee compliance and reporting for relevant funder relationships.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee a team of at least three full-time employees in immigration law practice, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services while promoting professional development and supporting relevant organizing efforts.
- Provide tailored assistance to clients in removal proceedings or seeking immigration relief across various categories, including SIJS, Asylum, U/T visas, and cancellation of removal.
- Advocate for immigrants facing complex legal challenges due to criminal records and other issues.
- Conduct know-your-rights workshops and informational sessions to educate immigrant communities on pertinent immigration matters.
- Support MRNY members and organizing initiatives through strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, and research.
- Facilitate team meetings and participate in legal department discussions.
- Manage key immigration grants and assist with grant reporting.
Qualifications:
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
- Full vaccination with an FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine required prior to employment.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and a valid license to practice law in New York State.
- A minimum of five years of experience in immigration law.
- Strong managerial, organizational, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Preferred knowledge of immigration law and removal defense litigation.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Proficiency in Spanish is required.
- Experience with populations represented in MRNY's membership is advantageous.

Compensation and Benefits:
The starting salary is determined by a scale established by a democratically-elected personnel committee, influenced by experience and education. MRNY offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid time off.
