Position: Solar Design Engineer

Location: Hybrid role available in Houston, Texas or New York City, NY

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and engineer system layouts while conducting shade analysis for feasibility assessments of B&I scale solar projects.
  • Create detailed single-line diagrams for various PV systems including rooftop, canopy, BIPV, and ground-mounted installations.
  • Maintain accurate records of design modifications in accordance with company document control procedures.
  • Collaborate with third-party EPCs, design firms, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to ensure compliance with local building and fire regulations.
  • Conduct preliminary energy production modeling for financial evaluations and finalize production modeling for performance acceptance tests utilizing PVSyst.
  • Execute additional tasks and special projects as assigned by the Director of Engineering.
  • Travel as necessary to conduct site surveys, oversee installation quality assurance/control, system commissioning, and vendor interactions.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent educational/certification background.
  • Proficiency in PVSyst, SAM, Helioscope, and Aurora software is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of drafting and photovoltaic techniques, including layer control, dimensioning, scaling, sheet sets, xrefs, and blocks.
  • Familiarity with engineering terminology is essential.
  • AutoCAD proficiency is preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry design standards such as IBC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 1, and OSHA.
  • Understanding of solar electric principles is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel 15%-20% of the time to job sites and engage with EPC vendors.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of prior solar design experience with an EPC, developer, or design firm.
Physical Requirements:

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
