Role Summary

The Library Assistant IV role encompasses a dual function that facilitates and enhances the operational processes within the Stacks Maintenance and Circulation divisions at Michigan State University Libraries.

Responsibilities Under the Head of Access Services:
  • Oversee the workflow of the Stacks Maintenance unit.
  • Assemble book trucks, perform book sweeps, shelve items, and retrieve books as necessary.
  • Conduct shelf inspections and monitor for excessive crowding, addressing concerns with the Head of Access Services.
  • Reorganize and shift books to alleviate overcrowding.
  • Recruit, schedule, train, and manage student workers in Stacks Maintenance.
  • Develop, oversee, and modify the student budget.
  • Engage in various library initiatives as assigned.
Responsibilities Under the Head of Circulation:
  • Address inquiries regarding Circulation policies, overdue fines, and related matters.
  • Guide library patrons to appropriate departments, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of library operations.
  • During designated hours, manage the workflow of the Circulation Department.
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate student staff at the Circulation public service desk, stepping in as needed.
  • Open and close the MSU Main Library, ensuring all patrons exit prior to closing.
  • Process patron requests, including remote storage, paging, holds, and media collection.
  • Create, interpret, and troubleshoot complex computer records.
  • Handle payments and manage the cash register, including daily financial reconciliation.
  • During assigned hours, ensure the security of the Main Library and adhere to emergency protocols, often collaborating with campus security.
  • Provide support to student employees in branch libraries and Main Library units during off-hours.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues with staff computers, library security systems, and public equipment.
  • Report maintenance issues to relevant campus departments.
  • Shelve returned items and load books onto carts, which may involve moving heavy loads.
  • Fulfill Controlled Digital Lending requests during designated hours.
  • Utilize a computer for over 50% of the workday.
  • Participate in various library projects as assigned.
The Michigan State University Libraries is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. The successful candidate will be expected to cover the responsibilities of other departmental staff during their absences. The distribution of work between Stacks Maintenance and Circulation may vary, requiring flexibility in scheduling. Work hours are assigned and may include daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that typically acquired through the completion of a four-year college degree; one to three years of progressively responsible experience in an office environment; familiarity with integrated library systems; knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system; recent experience working at a public service desk in an academic library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong collaborative skills and the ability to create a welcoming atmosphere; attention to detail and accuracy; problem-solving abilities with sound judgment; capacity to manage multiple priorities. Experience in supervising and training staff is desirable. Proficiency with software such as FOLIO, ILLiad, the MSU Library online catalog, and MSU Library electronic resources is preferred. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential for effective interaction with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and patrons.
