POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Patient Access Manager, and in compliance with The Joint Commission, as well as federal, state, and local regulations, the Patient Financial Services Specialist will assist non-emergency patients with financial planning. This role includes patient registration for services, maintaining accurate documentation, verifying insurance coverage, and processing payments. The specialist will also inform patients about their insurance benefits and estimated financial responsibilities, collecting payments at the time of service. Additionally, the Patient Financial Services Specialist will proactively manage the schedules for radiology and surgical services to communicate estimated costs to patients in advance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Facilitates registration for all patients seeking services.
  2. Accurately gathers, inputs, and records patient information.
  3. Completes necessary documentation, including signatures and insurance details, either on paper or electronically.
  4. Enters data into the system with a high degree of accuracy.
  5. Acts as a cashier for payments, ensuring precise cash handling.
  6. Informs relevant departments when a patient has completed registration.
  7. Alerts the Emergency Department of patient arrivals requiring triage.
  8. Meets with patients to discuss available financing options.
  9. Evaluates insurance status, verifies benefits, and calculates estimated patient liabilities.
  10. Collects applicable co-payments, deductibles, and co-insurance based on health plans.
  11. Engages with uninsured patients to discuss their financial responsibilities and available referral options.
  12. Navigates EHS software systems to determine patient financial obligations.
  13. Explains the Helping Hands program to eligible patients.
  14. Utilizes the ARx Outbound report to follow up on accounts that were not settled at the time of service.
  15. Provides courteous responses to patient inquiries regarding accounts or billing.
  16. Contacts scheduled surgery and radiology patients to inform them of their estimated financial responsibilities prior to service.
  17. Meets with patients post-outpatient services to clarify insurance benefits and provide estimates of liability.
  18. Conducts daily census rounds and forwards information to relevant departments.
  19. Handles outpatient self-pay accounts prior to scheduling procedures.
  20. Manages accounts related to crime victims, documenting appropriately.
  21. Maintains knowledge to address patient inquiries regarding accounts and insurance.
  22. Scans all records into electronic medical records systems.
  23. Assists with switchboard duties as required.
  24. Provides Advance Directives and Organ/Tissue Donor information to patients as per hospital policies.
  25. Acts as a representative of the facility, engaging with clients, families, and staff in a professional and caring manner.
  26. Completes required certifications with Hometown Health as directed by management.
  27. Ensures compliance with infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
  28. Supports team members as needed, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  29. Adheres to established hospital policies and procedures, including those regarding information release.
  30. Maintains equipment in good working order and reports any necessary repairs.
  31. Keeps a tidy and organized workspace.
  32. Performs additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Completion of high school or equivalent education is required.

TRAINING

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations and interpret data accurately.

CERTIFICATION

Must obtain Hometown Health Certifications within the initial review period and renew annually.

EXPERIENCE

A solid understanding of health insurance, including deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance is essential. A minimum of one year of experience in customer service, patient registration, or collections is preferred. Comfort with out-of-pocket collections and accuracy in capturing demographic and insurance information is necessary.
