Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the underwriting strategy, processes, planning, reporting, forecasting, business development, and innovation for the US insurance portfolio.
  • Drive growth and profitability of the underwriting portfolio in alignment with Relm's risk appetite to meet annual objectives.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and management to the US underwriting team, cultivating a high-performance culture and supporting the development of junior staff.
  • Build and maintain robust relationships with brokers, clients, and industry stakeholders to enhance market presence and stimulate business growth.
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, presenting as needed when opportunities arise.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve organizational goals and promote cross-selling opportunities.
  • Assist in strategic underwriting planning by developing and maintaining effective management information systems to evaluate the portfolio.
  • Ensure compliance with all internal and external underwriting and regulatory standards and legal requirements.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to guide underwriting strategies and decisions.
  • Engage in ad-hoc projects and tasks as assigned to contribute to Relm's continuous improvement and growth.

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in US insurance underwriting and/or broking, with expertise in Financial Lines, Professional Lines, Cyber, Casualty, and/or Property insurance being advantageous.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, actuarial science, computer science, or a related field; advanced degrees are preferred.
  • Strong relationships with US wholesale and retail brokers.
  • Comprehensive understanding of US insurance compliance requirements and best practices in business engagement.
  • Proven leadership experience at a national level with a history of successfully developing high-performing underwriting teams.
  • Extensive experience in negotiating, preparing, and drafting policy and endorsement language.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to assess complex risks and devise innovative solutions.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Creative problem-solver with strong critical thinking abilities and a diligent approach to task completion.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Confident communicator capable of articulating messages clearly and persuasively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Mac OS is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, comfortable leading client and broker meetings.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to work outside of core hours and travel internationally as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience managing and underwriting a primarily primary book of business.
  • Ability to perform data analytics using MS Excel or Power BI, including functions such as Tables, Pivot Tables, and formulae (VLOOKUP, IF, SUM).
  • Professional designations in insurance underwriting, such as RPLU, CPCU, ACII, AU, or similar.
  • A strong interest and conceptual understanding of Web3, Digital Assets, Blockchain, Cannabis, AI, or Financial Markets will be a differentiator.
