Position Overview:


This role is based at the Traverse City Service Center and involves travel throughout Michigan's lower peninsula.

Candidates should be located within a reasonable commuting distance or be open to relocation (relocation assistance available for eligible candidates).


Key Responsibilities:

The Junior Electrical Engineer will assist in the engineering and design efforts for the sustainable operation of Consumers Energy's distribution network.

This position collaborates with various teams and external partners, contributing to segments of technical projects as directed.

This role is situated within the Circuit Planning group for Low Voltage Distribution (LVD), which is responsible for planning the electric distribution infrastructure. Responsibilities include both office and fieldwork related to the performance of electric distribution circuits.

The work involves complex technical tasks, requiring minimal supervision, as well as addressing intricate customer inquiries through various communication channels.

The Circuit Planner's duties focus on two primary areas: 1) Customer Advocacy and 2) System Planning and Performance solutions.

Specific tasks encompass:

  • Identifying and developing solutions for system planning and reliability improvements.
  • Conducting economic evaluations of planning and reliability options.
  • Preparing project scope drawings.
  • Analyzing system power flow, including voltage and load assessments.
  • Coordinating load transfer plans.
  • Investigating and resolving customer reliability and voltage issues.
  • Updating customers on project statuses.
  • Assisting in storm restoration efforts.

Essential knowledge and skills for this position include:

  • Understanding of relevant codes related to electrical engineering.
  • Proficiency in design and calculation software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Familiarity with electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.

We encourage candidates with the following qualifications to apply:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution, or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution plus a Professional Engineering license.

In this role, you will:

  • Analyze multiple sources of technical and policy information to make informed decisions on complex system planning and performance issues.
  • Anticipate the effects of actions on various systems and a broad customer base.
  • Follow established practices and procedures independently.
  • Utilize creative thinking and investigation to resolve issues beyond standard practices.
  • Engage with internal and external clients, effectively communicating complex information.
  • Manage customer expectations while addressing intricate system performance challenges.
  • Train and mentor junior staff.

Additionally, you will:

  • Assist in the design and implementation of electrical systems and products.
  • Perform a variety of engineering tasks using computer-assisted design or engineering software.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to gather feedback from customers and colleagues regarding engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with standards and customer requirements by preparing specifications and technical documentation.
  • Conduct calculations to adhere to construction and manufacturing standards.
  • Prepare reports and compile data for senior engineer review.
  • Estimate costs for materials and labor for budget preparation.
