Job Overview

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC Lathe machines to manufacture precision components within specified tolerances and timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)

  • Develops intricate programs directly on the machine and via CAD/CAM software.
  • Designs and fabricates specialized fixtures for various machining tasks as needed.
  • Interprets blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, tooling sheets, and quality documentation to ensure accurate processes.
  • Configures production machines in accordance with technical drawings and specifications.
  • Selects, aligns, and securely mounts holding fixtures, cutting tools, and other necessary components on machines as per work instructions.
  • Utilizes mathematical skills and measuring instruments to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions or deviations in machining; adjusts machine controls to rectify issues.
  • Conducts inspections and measurements of finished products to detect defects resulting from machine setup.

Safety and Maintenance (10%)

  • Responsible for routine maintenance of machines and maintaining a clean workspace.
  • Ensures safe handling of materials using equipment such as cranes and carts.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols related to machine operation and workplace safety.

Reporting and Miscellaneous Duties (5%)

  • Keeps accurate records of work orders, production quantities, and quality assessments.
  • Follows instructions from work orders, interprets blueprints, and understands geometric tolerances.
  • Performs additional tasks and participates in training as directed by a supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

Completes other tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming or completion of a full apprenticeship program is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a qualified machinist is required.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in reading blueprints, job travelers, and quality documents, with familiarity in GD&T.
  • Experience with Mastercam and SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM applications.
  • Skilled in using inspection tools.
  • Strong mathematical abilities, including algebra and geometry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, and shop supplies.
  • Ability to plan, program, set up, and operate production based on engineering specifications.
  • Capable of following quality assurance plans and properly using inspection tools.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong time management skills.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of material properties and processing techniques, including heat treatment.
  • Experience with hard milling processes.
  • Familiarity with Renishaw Inspection Plus software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform repetitive tasks primarily related to computer work.
  • Capability to operate and maintain machinery, involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and stretching.
  • All ergonomic requirements must be met without significant risk of injury to oneself or others.
