Job Overview

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC Lathe machines to manufacture precision components that meet specified tolerances and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)

  • Develops intricate programs directly on the machine and through CAD/CAM software.
  • Designs and fabricates complex fixtures for various machining tasks as necessary.
  • Interprets blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, and quality documentation to ensure accuracy in processes.
  • Configures production machines according to technical specifications.
  • Selects, aligns, and securely attaches fixtures, cutting tools, and other materials based on work instructions.
  • Utilizes mathematical principles and measuring instruments to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions or deviations in machining; adjusts machine controls to rectify issues.
  • Conducts inspections and measurements of finished products to detect defects resulting from machine setup.

Safety and Maintenance (10%)

  • Responsible for routine maintenance of machines and maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Ensures safe handling of materials and equipment.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols, including machine operation and safeguarding measures.

Reporting and Documentation (5%)

  • Keeps accurate records of work orders, production quantities, and quality assessments.
  • Follows instructions related to work orders, blueprint interpretation, and geometric tolerances.
  • Engages in additional duties and training as assigned by management.

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

Performs other tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming or completion of a full apprenticeship program is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a qualified machinist is required.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in reading blueprints, job travelers, and quality documents.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam and SolidWorks.
  • Skilled in using inspection tools.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including algebra and geometry.
  • In-depth knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, and shop supplies.
  • Ability to plan, program, set up, and operate production based on engineering specifications.
  • Competent in following quality assurance protocols and maintaining inspection equipment.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with team members.
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong time management abilities.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of material properties and processing techniques.
  • Experience with hard milling processes.
  • Familiarity with Renishaw Inspection Plus software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds; perform repetitive movements primarily due to computer work.
  • Capability to operate and maintain machinery; requires prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must meet ergonomic standards to perform essential job functions safely.
