POSITION SUMMARY
The main objective of this role is to manage machining processes and direct personnel towards optimal workflow, quality standards, and timely project completion. This position is dedicated to ensuring that all machining operations are performed in alignment with the company's quality and productivity targets, while prioritizing safety at all times.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Responsibilities 60%
- Supervises and arranges the schedules and tasks of the department.
- Ensures the department is adequately staffed to achieve its goals.
- Assists in the formulation of departmental budgets.
- Maintains accurate production and employee documentation.
- Ensures compliance with company policies and safety regulations among staff.
- Collaborates with upper management to address employee issues or grievances.
- Works with team leads to coordinate daily production activities.
- Facilitates problem-solving, providing suggestions and guidance to staff.
- Ensures the accuracy of weekly production status reports; presents findings in weekly meetings.
- Conducts performance evaluations for each team member; monitors daily performance and addresses issues through appropriate corrective actions, training, or guidance.
- Promotes employee safety by ensuring proper and safe use of tools and equipment.
- Fosters effective collaboration with manufacturing and other departmental employees to build positive relationships.
- Coordinates with HR to manage manufacturing personnel matters when necessary.
Operational Duties 35%
- Executes machining tasks to support machining personnel as required.
- Organizes and carries out machining operations on designated projects, delegating tasks as needed.
- Assumes lead responsibilities for assigned projects.
- Engages in special projects as assigned.
- Ensures strong collaboration with Sales, Engineering, and Assembly teams.
- Exemplifies a positive attitude and encourages strong team engagement.
- Recognizes and responds positively to resource constraints, making judicious decisions in the best interest of the company regarding resource utilization.
- Encourages a culture of continuous improvement across all manufacturing functions by motivating employees to propose enhancements related to their roles.
- Continuously evaluates the performance of all machining functions to ensure adequate resources, materials, and information are available for maximum productivity and efficiency.
- Identifies staffing deficiencies and advises on recruitment, employee performance enhancement, training, and development to meet organizational performance requirements.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of manufacturing technologies and processes in line with advanced industry standards.
- Advises management on the acquisition of new machinery, equipment, tooling, and software to maintain competitive advantage in the industry.
Additional Responsibilities 5%
- Participates in special projects as directed by executive management.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent listening skills to fully comprehend inquiries, directions, and communications among all employees.
- Strong written and verbal communication, along with organizational skills.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and capable of quickly learning new software applications.
- Familiarity with ERP software such as Epicor.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, program and tooling sheets, tooling specifications, quality documents, and GD&T.
- Knowledge of CAD/CAM software like Mastercam and SolidWorks.
- Expertise in using handheld inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges, with a clear understanding of their applications.
- Strong capability in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, tolerancing, and GD&T.
- Solid understanding of the manufacturability of various materials including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, tool steel, and plastics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of machining and fabrication processes, as well as electro-mechanical assembly.
- Thorough understanding of tooling and machinery types, their applications, and proper usage.
- Proven problem-solving skills.
- Strong collaboration and organizational skills.
- High ethical standards.
- Team-oriented with the flexibility to manage diverse responsibilities as needed.
- Positive and diplomatic demeanor.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- A minimum of ten years of relevant experience, including at least five years in a supervisory capacity or equivalent experience.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in a technical field is preferred.
ERGONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS
Job responsibilities involve sitting, standing, bending, and lifting up to 15 pounds, as well as repetitive movements primarily due to computer work. Must be able to navigate the entire facility. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer are expected. All ergonomic tasks must be performed without significant risk of injury to oneself or others, or otherwise demonstrate how essential functions of the position can be performed safely.
