Position Summary
The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC Lathe machines to produce high-quality production components that meet specified tolerances and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)
- Develops intricate programs directly on the machine and through CAD/CAM software.
- Designs and fabricates specialized fixtures for various machining tasks as needed.
- Interprets blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, and quality documentation to ensure accuracy in processes and operations.
- Sets up production equipment in accordance with technical drawings and specifications.
- Selects, aligns, and securely attaches holding fixtures, cutting tools, and other necessary materials on machines based on work instructions.
- Utilizes mathematical knowledge and instruments to determine dimensions and tolerances.
- Identifies and resolves malfunctions or out-of-spec machining by adjusting machine controls.
- Conducts inspections and measurements of finished production units to detect defects stemming from machine setup.
Safety and Maintenance (10%)
- Responsible for routine maintenance of machines and maintaining a clean work environment.
- Ensures proper and safe operation of material handling equipment.
- Adheres to all safety protocols established by the company, including those related to machine operation.
Reporting and Documentation (5%)
- Keeps accurate records of work orders, production quantities, and quality assessments.
- Follows work order instructions and demonstrates proficiency in blueprint reading and geometric tolerances.
- Engages in miscellaneous tasks and training as directed by supervisory personnel.
Additional Duties (5%)
Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming or completion of a full apprenticeship program is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a qualified machinist is required.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Proficient in interpreting blueprints, job travelers, and quality documents.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam and SolidWorks.
- Skilled in using inspection tools.
- Strong mathematical abilities, including algebra and geometry.
- In-depth knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, and shop supplies.
- Capable of planning, programming, and executing production based on engineering specifications.
- Ability to adhere to quality plans and properly utilize inspection tools.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to foster positive working relationships.
- Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively within a team.
- Strong time management skills.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of material identification and processing methods, including heat treatment.
- Experience with hard milling techniques.
- Familiarity with Renishaw Inspection Plus software.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Capability to operate and maintain machinery, involving prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- All ergonomic tasks must be performed without significant risk of injury.
