Position Overview
The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC Lathe machines to manufacture production components that meet specified tolerances and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)
- Develops intricate programs both directly on the machine and through CAD/CAM software.
- Designs and fabricates complex fixtures for various machining tasks as needed.
- Interprets blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, and quality documentation to ensure accurate processes.
- Configures production machines according to technical specifications.
- Selects, aligns, and securely attaches fixtures, cutting tools, and other materials based on work instructions.
- Utilizes mathematical skills and measuring instruments to determine dimensions and tolerances.
- Identifies and rectifies malfunctions or deviations in machining; adjusts machine controls to resolve issues.
- Conducts inspections and measurements of finished products to detect defects resulting from machine setup.
Safety and Maintenance (10%)
- Responsible for routine maintenance of machines and maintaining a clean work environment.
- Ensures proper and safe operation of material handling equipment.
- Adheres to all safety protocols, including machine operation and safety guarding.
Reporting and Miscellaneous Duties (5%)
- Maintains basic reports on work orders, production quantities, and quality assessments.
- Follows work order instructions and possesses skills in blueprint reading and geometric tolerances.
- Performs additional tasks and participates in training as directed by management.
Additional Responsibilities (5%)
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming or completion of a full apprenticeship program is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a qualified machinist is required.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Proficient in reading blueprints, job travelers, and quality documents.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam and SolidWorks.
- Experience with inspection tools.
- Strong mathematical abilities, including algebra and geometry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, and shop supplies.
- Ability to plan, program, set up, and operate production based on engineering specifications.
- Competence in following quality plans and using inspection tools effectively.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
- Capability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Effective time management skills.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of material processing and characteristics.
- Experience with hard milling techniques.
- Familiarity with Renishaw Inspection Plus software.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Capability to operate and repair machinery, with prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Must perform all ergonomic tasks without significant risk of injury.
