Position Overview

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC Lathe machines to manufacture production components that meet specified tolerances and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)

  • Develops intricate programs both directly on the machine and using CAD/CAM software.
  • Designs and fabricates complex fixtures for various machining tasks as necessary.
  • Interprets blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, and quality documents to ensure accurate processes and operations.
  • Configures production machines in accordance with specifications and technical drawings.
  • Selects, aligns, and securely attaches holding fixtures, cutting tools, and other materials on machines as per work instructions.
  • Utilizes mathematical skills and instruments to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions or deviations in machining; adjusts machine controls to rectify errors.
  • Conducts inspections and measurements of finished production units to detect defects resulting from machine setup.

Safety and Maintenance (10%)

  • Responsible for routine maintenance of machines and maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Ensures safe handling of materials using equipment such as cranes and carts.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols established by the company, including machine operation and safety guarding.

Reporting and Miscellaneous Duties (5%)

  • Keeps basic records of work orders, production quantities, and quality assessments.
  • Follows instructions from work orders, including blueprint reading and understanding geometric tolerances.
  • Performs additional tasks and participates in training as directed by a supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming or completion of a full apprenticeship program is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a qualified machinist is required.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in reading blueprints, job travelers, and quality documents.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam and SolidWorks.
  • Experience with inspection hand tools.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including algebra and geometry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, and shop supplies.
  • Ability to plan, program, set up, and operate production based on engineering documentation.
  • Competence in following quality plans and maintaining inspection tools.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Capability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong time management skills.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of material processing characteristics and methods, including heat treatment.
  • Experience with hard milling techniques.
  • Familiarity with Renishaw Inspection Plus software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds, with repetitive movements primarily due to computer work.
  • Capability to operate and repair machinery, involving prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • All ergonomic requirements must be met without significant risk of injury.
