Job Overview

Position Summary: As an Electrical Communications Specialist focused on substation operations, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the high voltage electric distribution network. This position entails the testing, maintenance, and installation of protective relays and communication systems critical to our infrastructure. Collaborating closely with engineering teams, you will contribute to the development, execution, and ongoing enhancement of construction standards, material specifications, and electric service protocols.

Key Responsibilities: The following duties outline the primary functions of this role and are not exhaustive.

  • Conduct installation, testing, repair, maintenance, and calibration of protective relay systems, SCADA technology, transducers, and associated equipment.
  • Manage the installation and termination of control, metering, and wiring related to protective relay switchboards and substation electrical apparatus.
  • Diagnose and rectify issues with electronic and electromechanical components utilized in SCADA, telemetry, and relay systems.
  • Create and maintain documentation pertinent to substation maintenance and operational protocols.
  • Contribute to budget formulation, prepare financial documents, and authorize procurement of equipment.
  • Assist in the specification, installation, and upkeep of communication systems, including telephone, radio, and fiber optic links to SCADA and specific substation equipment.
  • Identify equipment necessary for interfacing SCADA with other systems and networks.
  • Provide training, maintenance, and troubleshooting support for SCADA and substation systems.
  • Oversee technical management of the 900 MHZ radio communication system.
  • Engage in NERC audits and perform relay testing to comply with NERC standards.
  • Execute project management tasks, including vendor and contractor coordination, reporting, scheduling, inspection, testing, and final commissioning.
  • Perform high voltage switching as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with FCC and OSHA regulations, as well as the National Electric Code and National Electric Safety Code.
  • Understanding of NERC audit and testing requirements and associated documentation.
  • Knowledge of Capital Projects Procedures.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including AutoCAD.
  • Experience with programmable control systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and project management capabilities.
