Wisconsin Building Trades Council

The Wisconsin Building Trades Council (WBTC) is a coalition of local building trades unions dedicated to advocating for over 6,000 members in the construction industry across our region. Our mission is to foster local employment opportunities, generate economic growth, and strengthen community ties through effective partnerships. The WBTC's primary goals include:

  • Advocating for labor-management apprenticeship initiatives;
  • Providing resources and guidance on construction and building trades matters;
  • Tackling challenges faced by workers in the building trades, such as worker classification, prevailing wage issues, right-to-work laws, and responsible contracting practices.

We are in search of a qualified individual to fill the full-time role of Executive Director. Compensation and benefits will be aligned with the candidate's qualifications and experience.   • Experience with building trades and labor organizations or employee rights;
  • Knowledge of youth and labor-management apprenticeship programs;
  • Scope of experience related to social, political, and legislative matters pertinent to the building trades and WBTC's objectives;
  • Other relevant professional qualifications or credentials;
  • Salary expectations.

Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director

The Executive Director will oversee the daily operations and activities of the Council, with responsibilities including but not limited to:

Leadership & Strategic Development

  • Act as a leader and representative of WBTC in alignment with its core objectives;
  • Formulate and execute strategic plans for the Council;
  • Prepare and propose the annual budget for WBTC.

Marketing and Promotion of Unionized Construction Trades

  • Advocate for labor-management apprenticeship programs within diverse communities;
  • Coordinate outreach initiatives in educational institutions and local organizations to promote careers in unionized construction trades;
  • Develop and implement communication strategies to highlight the Council's achievements;
  • Engage with media and stakeholders to enhance the Council's visibility;
  • Address additional public relations and marketing objectives as needed.

Advocacy & Government Relations

  • Establish and maintain relationships with elected officials and advocacy organizations to position WBTC as a key information source on the construction industry;
  • Collaborate with labor and advocacy groups to amplify the Council's political influence;
  • Build and sustain partnerships with developers and contractors;
  • Stay informed on relevant legislation and public issues affecting construction workers;
  • Lead initiatives advocating for responsible contracting practices;
  • Represent the Council on various boards and committees;
  • Prepare and submit necessary documentation and public comments as directed.

Administrative Duties

  • Manage the daily operations of WBTC, including vendor coordination and regulatory compliance;
  • Organize and facilitate meetings for the Executive Board and other committees;
  • Negotiate collective bargaining agreements for public sector workers;
  • Plan and execute outreach events, including labor-management breakfasts and community engagement activities;
  • Maintain and update the Council's website and digital content.
