Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Paralegal to join our team. As a Paralegal, you will provide advanced paralegal support to our attorneys and management team, performing complex tasks and projects with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the negotiation of real estate transactions, including contacting land owners, government officials, and attorneys to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Document and administer real estate occupancy transactions, collect rent, enforce terms and conditions of occupancy documents, and initiate corrective action for trespass cases.
  • Process land transactions, including contacting involved departments for approval, maintaining communication with the public, and preparing Board letters and documents.
  • Prepare and file annual tax-exempt status documents and process tax payments for real estate holdings.
  • Assist in drafting legal documents, including memoranda, pleadings, briefs, legal opinions, liens, and real estate documents, and record, track, and respond to subpoenas received by the District.
  • Perform legal research and cite checks, analyze results, and present findings in written memoranda.
  • Assist attorneys in case management, including establishment and maintenance of electronic files and databases, and document organization.
  • Coordinate the response to Freedom of Information Act inquiries, referring to the appropriate department, compiling information, drafting responsive correspondence, and monitoring requests to ensure timely response.
  • Interface with Finance in handling wage garnishments, child support orders, and bankruptcy matters.
  • Assist attorneys as needed in all phases of trial and appellate preparation, including discovery, preparing abstracts and indexing depositions, delivering files to courts and other governmental bodies, serving documents on opposing counsel, and preparing subpoenas.
  • Provide direction and instruction to Legal Assistants and assign and review the work of administrative support staff.

Requirements

  • Completion of an American Bar Association-approved paralegal training program.
  • Five years of experience in a paralegal position within a law office or legal department.
  • One year of service with the District as a Legal Assistant.
  • Civil service status as a Legal Assistant.
