Position Overview

Reporting to the Program Director, the LGBTQ+ Education Advocate plays a crucial role in liaising with educational institutions to address the academic and developmental needs of youth who have encountered complex early childhood trauma or are navigating mental health challenges. This position also provides guidance to schools on delivering educational services that affirm and support LGBTQ+ youth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Coordinator to assess the mental health needs of youth and their impact on educational requirements.
  • Facilitate the enrollment of youth in local school districts, ensuring smooth coordination between educational institutions and guardians.
  • Organize and accompany youth on tours and interviews at therapeutic day schools, actively participating in the process.
  • Design and implement educational programming for youth experiencing truancy, providing direct supervision.
  • Participate in educational meetings, including special education eligibility hearings and IEP meetings, to advocate for youth.
  • Support youth in completing school assignments and establish systems to aid those who struggle with attendance.
  • Advocate for the social and emotional needs of students within appropriate educational settings.
  • Provide psychoeducation to school staff on creating inclusive and affirming environments for LGBTQ+ students.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents, caregivers, and relevant stakeholders regarding educational progress and goals.
  • Utilize an organizational system to monitor daily school attendance and related incidents.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver trauma-informed care in community settings.
  • Attend all-staff meetings, including daily reports and monthly team gatherings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant human services field is preferred.
  • Experience working with youth in residential or community environments.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage projects effectively.
  • Familiarity with IEPs, 504 Plans, and special education processes.
  • Strong advocacy and communication skills.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
