Leidos is seeking a **Mechanical Engineering Lead** to oversee a team focused on the design and development of hardware and tooling for space-oriented products. This position provides a significant opportunity to influence ongoing and future sensor projects within the realm of space technology by leveraging your expertise in mechanical design and engineering leadership.

Key Responsibilities
As the Mechanical Engineering Lead, you will manage a team dedicated to space payload development, with responsibilities that include:
  • Designing components that ensure structural integrity and functionality under various environmental conditions, from fabrication through operational phases.
  • Comprehending the entire mechanical design process, from system-level architecture to individual components, including tolerance analysis.
  • Conducting thorough mechanical design reviews.
  • Performing mechanical analyses, including tolerance and environmental assessments, and utilizing Monte Carlo simulations to validate design capabilities.
  • Creating requirements for hardware testing protocols.
  • Building prototypes, analyzing their performance, and transitioning successful designs into production.
  • Collaborating with manufacturing engineers to decompose complex assemblies into manageable subassemblies based on production capabilities and cost considerations.
  • Establishing project timelines and priorities in conjunction with project and engineering management.
  • Managing project communications and progress tracking, including regular updates to engineering management.
  • Providing mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians, fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Identifying and addressing engineering challenges in collaboration with project leads.
  • Coordinating design efforts across multiple disciplines for new developments and modifications.
In addition, you will actively contribute to business growth initiatives, which include:
  • Engaging in business development activities, including client interactions and proposal preparations.
  • Supporting project scoping and client relationship management.
  • Responding to project-related inquiries and submissions in a timely manner.
  • Independently evaluating and applying standard engineering techniques and workflows to adapt designs as necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
Your role will also encompass:
  • Producing mechanical engineering schematics and layouts to meet customer specifications.
  • Understanding silicon, package, and board-level interconnect technologies.
  • Participating in project and design reviews, providing feedback on timelines and project completion.
  • Identifying areas needing additional support to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Offering engineering support during the manufacturing process.
Basic Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with a background in Mechanical Engineering, including:
  • A Bachelor's degree and 12-15 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of mechanical engineering experience, with a minimum of 3 years in mechanical FEA analysis.
  • A minimum of 2 years in a leadership role within a mechanical engineering team.
  • Familiarity with modern digital engineering processes, including Agile methodologies.
  • Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with advanced FEA techniques and material characterization/testing.
  • Ability to conduct stress analysis and design risk assessments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address complex technical issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver hardware solutions in resource-constrained environments.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have:
  • Experience in the design and manufacturing of space products.
  • Experience managing teams of mechanical engineers and technicians.
  • Familiarity with cross-functional project collaboration.
  • Experience with ANSYS software.
  • Current security clearance.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
