Manager of Advanced Planning Research in Autonomous Systems

Waymo is at the forefront of autonomous driving technology, dedicated to becoming the most reliable driver. Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has concentrated on creating the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to enhance mobility access while significantly reducing traffic-related fatalities. The Waymo Driver is the backbone of Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, the Waymo Driver has accumulated extensive experience, having autonomously navigated tens of millions of miles on public roads and simulated tens of billions of miles across more than 13 U.S. states.
The Waymo Applied Research team is committed to pioneering machine learning solutions that tackle unresolved challenges in autonomous driving, aiming to ensure the safe operation of Waymo vehicles in numerous cities and under diverse driving conditions. Our team actively seeks and nurtures collaborations with other research groups within Alphabet.
This hybrid position reports directly to a Director of Research.
Your Responsibilities:
- Design and implement a comprehensive ML-driven research agenda focused on autonomous vehicle planning.
- Integrate and expand upon cutting-edge research in robotics and machine learning to elevate the standards of high-level planning for autonomous vehicles, utilizing advanced methodologies in foundational modeling, reinforcement learning, and search techniques.
- Oversee and provide technical leadership to a team of research scientists, supporting their professional growth.
- Collaborate across departments to successfully introduce innovative technologies into production.
- Contribute to scholarly publications in prestigious academic venues.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated experience in developing or researching deep learning systems for robotics, including dataset management, evaluation, and model design.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Extensive hands-on experience in developing modern deep learning architectures and training methodologies.
- Master's or PhD in a relevant field, ideally within Machine Learning.
- A proven track record of publications in top-tier conferences or leading open-source projects in related domains.
- Strong software engineering skills, capable of implementing or enhancing large-scale data and evaluation pipelines.
- Proficiency in C++ programming.
- Familiarity with one or more deep learning frameworks.
- Experience in autonomous vehicle planning and associated research.
The anticipated base salary range for this full-time role is outlined below. Actual starting compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees may also participate in the company's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and comprehensive benefits program, subject to eligibility criteria.

$320,000 - $346,000 USD
