The Waymo Driver underpins Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, the Waymo Driver has amassed extensive experience by autonomously navigating tens of millions of miles on public roads and simulating tens of billions of miles across more than 13 U.S. states.

The Waymo Applied Research team is committed to crafting machine learning solutions that tackle unresolved challenges in autonomous driving, aiming to ensure the safe operation of Waymo vehicles in numerous cities and diverse driving conditions. We also engage in collaborations with other research teams within Alphabet to enhance our efforts.

This hybrid position reports directly to a Director of Research.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a forward-thinking ML-driven research agenda focused on autonomous vehicle planning.
  • Integrate and advance cutting-edge research in robotics and machine learning to elevate high-level planning techniques for autonomous vehicles, utilizing innovative methods in foundational modeling, reinforcement learning, and search algorithms.
  • Lead and mentor a team of research scientists, guiding their professional development.
  • Collaborate within and across departments to facilitate the integration of groundbreaking technologies into production.
  • Contribute to scholarly publications in prestigious academic forums.
Your Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing or researching deep learning systems for robotics, including dataset management, evaluation, and model design.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in developing contemporary deep learning architectures and training methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or PhD, ideally in the Machine Learning domain.
  • A proven track record of publications in top-tier conferences or leadership in open-source projects relevant to the field.
  • Strong software engineering skills, capable of implementing or enhancing large-scale data and evaluation pipelines.
  • Proficiency in C++ programming.
  • Familiarity with one or more deep learning frameworks.
  • Experience in autonomous vehicle planning and associated research.

The anticipated base salary range for this full-time role is provided below. Actual starting compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible for participation in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and comprehensive company benefits program, subject to eligibility criteria.

$320,000 - $346,000 USD
