Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has concentrated on creating the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced DriverTM—to enhance mobility access while significantly reducing traffic-related fatalities. The Waymo Driver is the backbone of Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, the Waymo Driver has accumulated extensive experience by autonomously navigating tens of millions of miles on public roads and simulating tens of billions of miles across more than 13 U.S. states.
The Driver Understanding and Evaluation (DUE) team at Waymo is focused on developing comprehensive metrics to assess the Waymo Driver's behavior in real-world scenarios. This team is at the forefront of evaluating the performance of the Waymo Driver through innovative technologies.
The DUE Machine Learning team seeks to integrate human insights with advanced deep learning models to generate training and evaluation data for numerous metrics and components that constitute the Waymo Driver. We are in search of researchers and software engineers who are enthusiastic about advancing computer vision and machine learning methodologies for the evaluation systems within our autonomous vehicles, and who are dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of our technology stack.
Your Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development and refinement of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and machine learning models to improve human-led triaging and automate high-volume workflows.
- Implement Reinforcement Learning based on industry best practices and human preference-driven data collection and evaluation systems.
- Enhance User Feedback Analysis by collaborating with product and business teams to create and execute tools for multi-label classifications, sentiment analysis, comment summarization, root cause analysis, and trend analysis of rider feedback.
- Steer technical direction and provide guidance and technical insights to the team.
- Work collaboratively with various teams (e.g., Prediction, Planning, Research, PMs, TPMs), other technical leads, and senior leadership across Waymo to drive significant strategic initiatives.
- B.S. in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proficiency in C++ or Python programming.
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: Computer Vision, Foundational Models, NLP, or Robotics.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in computer vision and machine learning projects.
- Familiarity with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Hugging Face's transformers, along with expertise in deep learning models and large-scale ML deployment.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related quantitative field with a focus on machine learning.
- Experience in developing tools for applied machine learning, including MLOps, evaluation/validation techniques, and model performance optimization.
- Strong skills in large-scale data processing and analysis.
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
