The Waymo Driver facilitates Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With extensive experience, the Waymo Driver has successfully completed over one million rider-only trips, driven tens of millions of miles on public roads, and simulated tens of billions of miles across more than 13 U.S. states.

The Waymo Applied Research team is committed to crafting machine learning solutions that tackle unresolved challenges in autonomous driving, aiming to operate Waymo vehicles safely in numerous cities and under diverse driving conditions. Our team actively seeks and nurtures collaborations with other research groups within Alphabet.

In this hybrid position, you will:

  • Lead and oversee a team focused on developing large-scale perception foundation models that support various offboard and onboard applications for the Waymo Driver.
  • Define the technical vision for the team, create execution plans, and ensure alignment of individual contributions with overarching strategies.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams throughout Waymo, including those specializing in perception, simulation, and machine learning infrastructure.
  • Promote an inclusive team culture that encourages research innovation and delivers significant outcomes.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience managing medium-sized teams.
  • Proven history of cultivating team culture and supporting individual growth.
  • At least 6 years of experience in deep learning research and its application in production environments.
Preferred Skills:
  • Strong expertise in perception-related fields, including object detection, Transformer modeling, model scaling, and self-supervised learning.
  • Familiarity with large language models (LLM) and vision-language models (VLM).

The anticipated base salary range for this full-time role across U.S. locations is provided below. Actual starting compensation will depend on job-related factors, including specific work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Further details regarding the specific salary range for the role location or remote work can be discussed during the hiring process.

Waymo employees may also qualify for participation in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and comprehensive Company benefits program, subject to eligibility criteria.
