Full Time

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) provides comprehensive medical care to a diverse patient population. The CNS conducts assessments and manages patient care independently while collaborating with other healthcare professionals. Ensures effective management of illnesses and injuries, as well as disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Guides patients regarding ongoing care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts and documents thorough physical assessments and detailed health histories.
  • Operates independently to perform age-appropriate evaluations for patients.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relevant to the patient's age-specific requirements.
  • Prescribes suitable pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options.
  • Implements strategies to assist patients in regaining or maintaining physiological stability.
  • Aids in the delivery of care in accordance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of care interventions.
  • Facilitates patient transitions within and between healthcare settings, including admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Supports decision-making for staff, patients, and families by providing educational resources.
  • Participates as a member of a patient management team.
  • Conducts admission assessments and physical examinations.
  • Performs interim physical evaluations of medical status as needed.
  • Provides patient education and engages in patient/family interventions.
  • Responds to medical emergencies as required.
  • Executes medical procedures with or without direct physician supervision within the scope of the license/certification.
  • Engages in discharge planning.
  • Follows up on post-operative cases and manages home-care post hospitalization.
  • Consults with patients and prospective patients/families by phone, evaluating and triaging care needs and advising on appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborates with other professionals regarding patient care decision-making as necessary.
  • Acts as a liaison between medical staff, nursing staff, patients, and insurance providers.
  • Ensures the appropriate application of critical pathways.
  • Participates in patient decision-making by providing information regarding pathophysiology and the benefits/risks of treatment options.
  • Coordinates clinical trials, including communication with the Human Subjects Committee, consent forms, and patient recruitment.
  • Oversees data collection and patient activities in clinical research.
  • Assists with the development of nursing staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to UHealth Tower and unit-level policies and procedures while safeguarding organizational assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Master's degree in a relevant field

Certification and Licensing:
Valid State of Florida CNS License

Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment. Effective communication skills in both oral and written form.
