Position Summary

  • The Campus Safety Officer is a full-time, non-exempt role that supports the management of the Public Safety department.
  • This position operates on a 4/10 alternative work schedule, including evening, weekend, and on-call duties.

  • Responsibilities include patrolling the campus via motor vehicle, foot, ESV, or bicycle to safeguard life and property.
  • The officer maintains order, conducts investigations, prepares reports, enforces parking regulations, and responds to medical emergencies.
  • Daily activity logs must be updated promptly, and incident reports should be clear and concise.
  • In addition to reporting, the role involves compliance and training responsibilities.
  • The officer provides guidance and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Additional duties may be assigned to fulfill the objectives of the Public Safety Department.
  • This position carries campus security authority under federal law regarding campus safety disclosures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrol and Safety Duties:
  • Conduct motor vehicle and foot patrols across campus facilities.
  • Respond to radio and telephone dispatch calls.
  • Ensure the safety and security of individuals and property.
  • Secure buildings and respond to alarm systems.
  • Provide assistance and directions to campus community members.
  • Manage traffic as needed.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid when necessary.
  • Handle after-hours notifications regarding employee injuries.

Reporting, Compliance, and Training:

  • Maintain accurate and timely updates to departmental activity logs.
  • Recommend improvements to enhance safety and reduce risks.
  • Identify and report safety hazards for correction.
  • Assist with the transfer of funds and provide escort services as required.
  • Conduct safety training sessions for students, including emergency procedures.
  • Investigative Duties:
  • Investigate reported incidents and prepare detailed reports.
  • Handle traffic accident investigations and enforce relevant laws.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and testify in court as needed.

Parking Enforcement:

  • Enforce parking regulations and manage abandoned vehicles.
  • Issue parking permits and licenses for bicycles.

This role may involve exercising arrest powers while on duty, in accordance with established policies.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • PC832 CA POST Certificate preferred; training may be required for those without certification.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to public safety.
  • Proficient in operating a vehicle under various conditions.
  • Strong report writing skills with attention to grammar and clarity.
  • Ability to prepare criminal cases and testify effectively.
  • Familiarity with safety codes and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills and legible handwriting.
  • Technical aptitude for departmental tools and systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for diverse interactions.
  • Knowledge of campus layout and safety systems.
  • Must possess and maintain relevant certifications and a valid California Driver License.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform patrol duties, including walking, running, and climbing.
  • Capacity to respond to emergencies and provide physical assistance.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment as necessary.
