Position Overview:

The Building Automation Project Engineer plays a pivotal role in the design and execution of automation projects. Daily responsibilities will vary based on the unique needs of each assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Client Engagement (20%)

  • Offer technical expertise to a project team of 2-5 engineers.
  • Delegate tasks effectively within the project team.
  • Facilitate meetings with clients.
  • Support proposal development by estimating hardware costs and engineering efforts.
  • Foster relationships with current clients.

Instrumentation & Electrical Design (30%)

  • Develop instrument lists by analyzing P&ID diagrams.
  • Investigate instrumentation options (temperature transmitters, pressure transmitters, flow meters, valve actuators, etc.) and select suitable devices for the project.
  • Research and choose appropriate control hardware for the project.
  • Compile documentation for controls and instrument hardware submissions.
  • Create panel layouts and electrical schematics for control enclosures.
  • Acquire necessary project hardware.
  • Provide technical assistance to panel fabrication teams.
  • Inspect finished control enclosures.

System Design and Configuration (30%)

  • Lead design review meetings with clients.
  • Configure user interfaces and HMI screens.
  • Set up DDC, PLC, and/or DCS control algorithms.
  • Conduct internal functional and quality control testing.
  • Draft comprehensive system documentation.
  • Assist in client demonstrations and acceptance testing.

Onsite System Commissioning (20%)

  • Install project software and configurations on-site.
  • Engage in point-to-point loop checks for all instrumentation.
  • Perform software calibration and tuning.
  • Conduct functional tests of all systems.
  • Troubleshoot any installation discrepancies.
  • Support additional client testing.
  • Program field modifications as necessary.
  • Educate client representatives on system operations and maintenance.

Qualifications:

Technical Expertise (One or more of the following technologies)

  • Controls Experience:
    • Siemens: Proficient with Apogee (PXC), Talon Controllers, DXR controllers, Desigo CC or Insight.
    • Distech: Familiar with BACnet and LON Distech controllers, Eclypse Controllers.
    • Rockwell: Experience with FactoryTalk Suite, RS Logix/Studio 5000, and familiarity with PlantPAx DCS.
    • Johnson Controls: Knowledge of Facility Explorer or Metasys controllers.
    • Tridium: Proficient in Niagara N4.
  • Additional Technologies:
    • Familiarity with scripting languages (VBA, Python, etc.).
    • Knowledge of Kepware OPC server, ThinManager, and VMware is advantageous.

HVAC Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of HVAC systems within large building automation frameworks.
  • Comprehension of operational sequences and P&IDs for HVAC and plant utilities.
  • Experience in functional testing, including the ability to create, maintain, and execute test plans.
  • Experience in specifying instrumentation and control valves for HVAC systems.
