Overview

Under general oversight, the Senior Attorney undertakes a variety of legal responsibilities, which encompass the preparation and examination of legal documents, as well as representing the District in judicial proceedings and before regulatory entities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Litigates and defends cases in both state and federal courts, represents the District in front of regulatory bodies, drafts legal documents, and engages in settlement negotiations.
  • Drafts legal instruments such as bonds, leases, and contracts, while also reviewing environmental permits for compliance with legal standards.
  • Provides legal counsel to District officials on various legal matters and prepares legal opinions.
  • Ensures adherence to land use agreements.
  • Aids in the formulation of rules, procedures, and policies.
  • Oversees paralegal and administrative personnel.
Additional Duties
  • Completes assigned tasks as necessary.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive understanding of Illinois and Federal Civil Procedure Codes and Rules of Evidence.
  • Acquaintance with administrative agencies and procedures in state and federal courts.
  • Familiarity with laws, regulations, and guidelines governing District operations.
  • Strong negotiation capabilities.
  • Competence in managing cases in courts and administrative settings, along with drafting compelling briefs and opinions.
  • Proficient in legal research platforms such as Westlaw.
  • Offers insightful legal advice.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Essential Qualifications

Admission to the Illinois Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois is mandatory.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree and possess a minimum of two years of legal practice experience.

Promotion Criteria
  • Requires one year of service as an Assistant Attorney within the District.
  • Civil service status as an Assistant Attorney is essential.
