Overview

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a dedicated legal professional to perform a variety of essential legal functions. This role involves drafting and evaluating legal documents, as well as representing the District in judicial and administrative proceedings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Litigates and defends cases in both state and federal courts, representing the District in front of administrative entities, preparing legal documentation, and negotiating settlements.
  • Drafts legal instruments such as contracts, leases, and bonds, while also reviewing environmental permits for compliance and legality.
  • Provides legal counsel to District officials on various legal matters and prepares legal opinions.
  • Ensures adherence to land use agreements.
  • Aids in the formulation of rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversees the work of paralegal and administrative personnel.
Additional Duties
  • Completes assigned tasks as necessary.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive understanding of Illinois and Federal Civil Procedure Codes and Rules of Evidence.
  • Familiarity with administrative agencies and the procedural frameworks of state and federal courts.
  • In-depth knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines governing District operations.
  • Exceptional negotiation capabilities.
  • Competence in managing cases within courts and administrative bodies, along with drafting compelling briefs and legal opinions.
  • Proficient in utilizing legal research platforms such as Westlaw.
  • Offers insightful legal guidance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Essential Qualifications

Must hold admission to the Illinois Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Educational Background

Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and have a minimum of two years of legal practice experience.

Advancement Criteria
  • One year of service as an Assistant Attorney with the District is required.
  • Civil service status as an Assistant Attorney is a prerequisite.
