Join the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) in a pivotal role at the Montana State Hospital.

The Montana State Hospital (MSH) stands as the sole public psychiatric facility in Montana, dedicated to providing comprehensive inpatient psychiatric care for adults grappling with severe mental health conditions. The Director of Nursing (DON) at MSH will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, while also collaborating with the Chief Nursing Officer of the Healthcare Facilities Division within DPHHS. This position is responsible for overseeing, managing, and coordinating patient care services. The MSH DON will lead efforts to foster, integrate, and evaluate the establishment and sustainability of professional nursing practices. This role also acts as a crucial link, promoting collaboration between medical personnel and nursing teams.

The MSH DON will work closely with nursing leaders and staff to cultivate a professional nursing environment that enhances nursing practices, improves patient care quality, achieves clinical objectives, and ensures a positive experience for patients. This position promotes the Nurse-Physician dyad model of inter-professional collaboration at all levels of the organization.

Qualifications for This Role
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing practices within a psychiatric context.
  • Ability to stay informed on regulations and best practices in the nursing field.
  • Proficient in researching, compiling, and analyzing data from various sources to identify and address diverse issues.
  • Capable of maintaining composure and understanding in interactions with individuals holding differing perspectives.
  • Adherence to the Code of Professional Nurses.
  • Familiarity with the Nurse Practice Act of Montana, maintaining current knowledge of professional nursing standards within this framework.
  • Minimum qualifications include:
    • A Master's degree in nursing.
    • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Montana or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to employment.
    • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in psychiatric or mental health nursing.
