The Gun Lake Tribe is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Higher Education Specialist to join our Education Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing administrative support to our education programs, including the Higher Education Scholarship Program, Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver, and Vocational Training Program.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clerical assistance, including drafting and editing documents, filing and maintaining records, and updating bulletin boards.
- Communicate regularly with students to ensure adherence to program requirements and payment deadlines.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with department members, tribal citizens, and outside agencies to support the services offered to Indigenous students.
- Assist with the oversight and administration of all tribal education programs, including but not limited to:
- Higher Education Scholarship Program
- Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver
- Vocational Training Program
- Grade Incentives Program
- Higher Education Laptop Program
- D.K. Sprague Educational Scholarship Endowment Program
- Assist with the development and coordination of educational youth activities, such as college visits, career fairs, and retreats.
- Assist with planning educational opportunities to further the college and career readiness of the GLT citizens.
- Attend required meetings, provide information/leadership as appropriate, and participate in any work group or committee assignments when appropriate.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of special projects and events involving the Education Department.
- Conduct surveys, assessments, and collect data, when necessary to analyze the higher education needs of the tribal membership.
- Host an annual community forum for GLT Higher Education students in collaboration with Human Resources, Casino, and Gun Lake Investments.
- Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field and one (1) year of experience in the education field or closely related OR
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 3 years of experience in the education field or closely related field
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office computer programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Publisher
- Previous experience in tribal governments and/or communities
- Working knowledge of Native American culture and traditions
- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
- Must have good organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
- Ability to operate postage, fax, and copy machines
- Able to be patient, courteous, and reliable
- Flexible, highly organized, and able to work independently
- Ability to correspond with individuals throughout all levels of government and intergovernmental organizations
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, government regulations, etc.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy and procedures
- Must be efficient in operating Microsoft office software and have general computer knowledge
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality of all matters
- Must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, meet tight deadlines, sitting for long periods of time, bending, lifting, and reaching
