Director of Academic Infrastructure - Office of the Provost

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is inviting applications for the role of Director of Academic Infrastructure within the Office of the Provost.

This pivotal position is responsible for delivering comprehensive analysis, strategic guidance, and effective coordination regarding academic infrastructure, aligning with the university's strategic vision, campus development plans, capacity requirements, and institutional objectives. The role involves collaboration with various campus departments to assess and prioritize academic space and infrastructure needs.

The Director will provide informed recommendations to the Office of the Provost concerning space utilization, the prioritization of instructional and research needs, and forecasts for future infrastructure and classroom technology requirements. Acting as the primary liaison for colleges and academic units, the Director will advocate for academic space necessities and lead the coordination of projects impacting these units.

As the flagship research institution in the state, UT serves approximately 36,000 students and 8,000 staff members, committed to excellence in education, research, and community engagement.

Compensation

  • The market range for this position is MR14, with a hiring range of $115,000-$125,000 based on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities

Campus-Level Analysis and Planning

  • Collaborate with various campus offices, including the Office of the Registrar, Facilities Services, Campus Architect, Finance and Administration, Office of Innovative Technologies, and the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development, to evaluate academic space and infrastructure requirements in line with strategic and master plans.
  • Offer strategic guidance to the Office of the Provost regarding space utilization and the prioritization of instructional and research needs.
  • Forecast future space, infrastructure, and classroom technology requirements based on institutional goals and capacity demands.
  • Deliver clear analysis and recommendations to the Office of the Provost, serving as the lead for master planning focused on academic infrastructure.
  • Act as a liaison, representing academic interests throughout the capital project programming and conceptual design phases.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Emergency Management and other partners to develop, revise, and implement emergency plans for academic infrastructure.

Central Point of Contact

  • Serve as the primary contact within the Office of the Provost for colleges and academic units regarding their infrastructure needs, advocating for academic space requirements.
  • Regularly engage with college leadership teams and campus space advisory groups to assess academic infrastructure.
  • Formulate plans to address both short- and long-term needs, operationalizing and tracking these plans to completion.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Services, Finance and Administration, and other campus offices on academic infrastructure projects, including construction, renovations, and relocations.
  • Develop and manage communication strategies for academic infrastructure projects.

Space Management Practices

  • Act as the central contact for all space requests from academic units, evaluating requests, identifying options, and coordinating solutions involving renovation and construction.
  • Develop policy recommendations regarding campus space usage and refine processes related to space requests. Lead initiatives such as the Classroom Upgrade Committee and the Campus Space Committee.
  • Research and implement best practices for space utilization in collaboration with stakeholders.

Qualifications & Education (Required)

  • Bachelor's degree and six years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in space management, including planning and design.
  • Proficiency in process analysis and improvement.
  • Project management experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required)

  • Strategic planning capabilities: ability to plan, organize, and collaborate with various partners and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to space planning, facilities operations, and building construction.
  • Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Understanding of building types and uses, along with space management procedures.

Qualifications & Education (Preferred)

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • Experience with academic processes such as budgeting and course scheduling.
  • Experience in university or college administration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Preferred)

  • Familiarity with higher education space management systems.
  • Ability to build diverse leadership and work teams while meeting performance standards.
  • Effectiveness in working with faculty, college leadership, and central administrators.
