POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Animal Facility Director, the Animal Care Technician 2 plays a vital role in supporting a centralized laboratory animal resource program within an academic health science institution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Animal Facility Director in executing assigned responsibilities independently to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Compile and maintain comprehensive documentation of health assessments and standard medical inquiries and procedures.
  • Collaborate with researchers and laboratory staff to provide support for various research initiatives requiring specialized animal care practices.
  • Oversee the implementation of specialized animal husbandry services.
  • Perform essential daily care and maintenance tasks for animals housed under standard and specialized conditions, including feeding, watering, and providing tailored care, as well as record-keeping and cage maintenance.
  • Sanitize animal enclosures, pens, and equipment; conduct minor repairs as necessary.
  • Administer medications and treatments under the guidance of the Director and/or research personnel.
  • Assist researchers with pre- and post-procedure evaluations, which may involve recording vital signs and standard medical history responses.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment essential for the daily operations of the animal facility, including cleaning agents and maintenance tools.
  • Monitor and assess newly arrived animals during their initial acclimatization phase.
  • Ensure appropriate housing and identification for newly arrived animals following their quarantine period.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of relevant experience; OR an Associate's Degree in lieu of experience; OR Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level with one (1) year of experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with the Animal Welfare Act and related regulations.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Experience in assessing the health status of laboratory animals.
  • Knowledge of specialized housing for research animals.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks effectively.
  • Experience with microisolator techniques for animal care.
  • Knowledge of chemical mixing for sterilization purposes.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may require occasional evening and weekend shifts.
