Director of Academic Infrastructure - Office of the Provost

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Director of Academic Infrastructure within the Office of the Provost.

This position plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive analysis, strategic guidance, and coordination concerning academic infrastructure, aligning with the university's strategic vision, campus development plans, and institutional objectives. The Director collaborates with various campus departments to assess and prioritize academic space and infrastructure requirements.

The Director will offer insights, analysis, and recommendations to the Office of the Provost regarding space utilization, prioritization of instructional and research needs, and forecasting future requirements for space, infrastructure, and classroom technology. This role serves as the primary liaison in the Office of the Provost for colleges and academic units regarding their infrastructure needs, advocating for academic space requirements, and leading the coordination and communication of projects impacting these units.

Compensation

  • The market range for this position is MR14, with a hiring range of $115,000-$125,000, contingent upon qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities

Campus-Level Analysis and Planning

  • Collaborate with various campus offices, including the Office of the Registrar, Facilities Services, Campus Architect, Finance and Administration, Office of Innovative Technologies, and the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development, to evaluate academic space and infrastructure needs within the framework of strategic and master plans.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Office of the Provost on space utilization and prioritization of instructional and research needs.
  • Forecast future requirements for space, infrastructure, and classroom technology based on institutional objectives and capacity demands.
  • Deliver clear analysis and recommendations to the Office of the Provost, leading master planning efforts with a focus on academic infrastructure.
  • Act as a liaison, representing academic interests throughout the capital project programming and conceptual design phases.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Emergency Management and other partners to develop, revise, and implement emergency plans for academic infrastructure.

Central Point of Contact

Serve as the primary contact in the Office of the Provost for colleges and academic units regarding their infrastructure needs, including:

  • Regular meetings with college leadership teams and campus space advisory groups to evaluate academic infrastructure.
  • Developing plans to address both short-term and long-term needs, operationalizing these plans, and ensuring their completion.
  • Acting as a liaison with Facilities Services, Finance and Administration, and other campus offices on academic infrastructure projects, including construction, renovations, and relocations.
  • Creating and coordinating communication strategies for academic infrastructure projects.

Space Management Practices

  • Serve as the main contact within the Office of the Provost for all space requests from academic units, evaluating requests, identifying options, and coordinating solutions involving renovation and/or construction.
  • Develop policy recommendations regarding campus space usage and refine processes related to space requests. Lead initiatives such as the Classroom Upgrade Committee and the Campus Space Committee.
  • Research best practices in space utilization and lead efforts to implement these practices in collaboration with stakeholders.

Qualifications & Education (Required)

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in space management, including planning and design.
  • Experience in process analysis and improvement.
  • Project management experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required)

  • Strategic planning capabilities: ability to plan, organize, and collaborate with partners and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to space planning, facilities operations, and building construction.
  • Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Understanding of building types and uses, as well as space management procedures and priorities.

Qualifications & Education (Preferred)

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • Experience with academic processes such as budgeting and course scheduling.
  • Experience in university or college administration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Preferred)

  • Familiarity with higher education space management systems.
  • Ability to build diverse leadership and work teams and meet performance standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, college leadership, central administrators, and personnel in partnering non-academic units.
