About Campus Security

Campus security personnel are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the college community. They are available around the clock to respond to emergencies and provide assistance as needed.

As defined by state regulations, a campus security officer is an individual appointed by the institution to provide law enforcement services, uphold laws, and maintain public safety.

In addition to ensuring a secure environment, campus security offers various services, including:

  • First Aid Assistance
  • Vehicle Jump Starts
  • Unlocking Vehicles
  • Lost and Found Services
  • Escorts on Campus
  • Community Engagement Initiatives
Campus security officers are expected to be present on campus 30 minutes before classes begin and remain for 30 minutes after they conclude. Officers work designated shifts during the day and evening, with no on-call, weekend, or overnight duties. Shifts typically run from 0700 hours to 2230 hours, with a standard workweek of 37.5 hours and minimal overtime. Officers are not required to work during administrative closures due to holidays or inclement weather.

Position Overview: The primary responsibility of this role is to foster a safe and secure atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

30% Conduct patrols of college grounds and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity. Enforce state laws and institutional policies. Apprehend offenders when necessary and maintain issued equipment.

25% Investigate incidents of criminal activity, accidents, and injuries. Prepare detailed reports and documentation for legal proceedings. Review security footage to support investigations and enhance campus safety.

10% Provide training and oversight for contract security personnel. Instruct on effective patrol methods, emergency procedures, and report writing.

10% Inspect campus facilities for safety concerns and respond to requests for access to secured areas.

5% Participate in emergency response drills and assist local law enforcement during significant incidents.

5% Administer first aid and coordinate emergency services as needed.

5% Monitor campus events and provide security as required.

5% Manage traffic flow and enforce parking regulations.

5% Maintain P.O.S.T. certification through ongoing training and professional development.

Qualifications:

Requires one year of experience as a certified police officer with current P.O.S.T. certification or equivalent experience with the ability to obtain recertification within six months.

Must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum age of 18

• U.S. citizenship

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Successful completion of a thorough background check

• Good moral character as determined by an investigation

• Physical fitness for self-defense and emergency response

Skills and Competencies:
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships within the college community.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and technology.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor security staff.
Working Conditions:

Officers must meet physical standards set by the P.O.S.T. Academy and complete annual training. The role requires the ability to stand for extended periods, walk significant distances, and perform physical tasks as necessary.
