Position Title: Academic Success Coach

Reports to: Assistant Director, Strategic Initiatives

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for the role of Academic Success Coach within the Academic Success Center.

The mission of the Academic Success Center is to empower students to establish and realize their career ambitions through comprehensive career education.

Position Overview: The Academic Success Coach delivers proactive and intentional academic and social support to first-year students at UTK. Coaches will cultivate meaningful relationships with a designated group of first-year students, assisting them in identifying and developing their strengths while co-creating personalized academic success plans tailored to their individual goals and well-being. Utilizing data and referrals from faculty and staff, coaches promote student persistence by identifying and reaching out to those requiring short-term or long-term academic support. Coaching sessions focus on helping students holistically understand their strengths and how these can facilitate their academic success and overall well-being. Support may be provided through various strategies, including time management, learning techniques, goal-setting, and targeted referrals to campus resources that enhance the student experience. Coaching interactions may occur in both structured office settings and informal locations across campus.



Key Responsibilities:

Academic Coaching:

Provide tailored academic coaching (time management, goal setting, study skills, resource referrals, etc.) to diverse student populations; assist in resolving academic challenges; teach effective learning strategies;

Manage the Academic Alert program, conducting routine communication and outreach for students on alert;

Support case management for first-year students requiring additional academic assistance;

Offer academic support for upperclassmen in need of further resources and strategies;

Review student academic records in preparation for meetings to better assist students in their academic progress;

Utilize extensive knowledge of university policies to guide students in navigating academic decisions and enhancing persistence;

Conduct one-on-one meetings to develop learning and life strategies that foster academic success;

Facilitate group activities to promote social integration within the university;

Develop skills in time management, goal setting, study planning, and test preparation, while enhancing critical thinking and interpersonal skills for improved learning outcomes.

Establish connections within the campus community, helping students maximize their opportunities at the university.

Participate in student-facing events to build relationships with students;

Utilize academic software to document coaching sessions and student communications.

Support in Center Initiatives:

Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and initiatives as the center evolves to meet campus needs;

Engage in assessment activities as required;

Participate in outreach activities, including campus events and orientation programs;

Engage with students during new student orientations and recruitment events;

Pursue professional development opportunities actively;

Utilize standard office software for communication and program material development;

Attend weekly staff and departmental meetings.

Outreach and Campus Involvement:

Maintain regular communication with assigned first-year students through in-person and electronic means;

Conduct informal sessions outside the office to strengthen student connections;

Facilitate group coaching sessions aimed at promoting academic success.

Qualifications:

Required: A bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience in higher education, K-12, or community outreach environments.

Preferred: A master's degree and experience in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Required:

· Knowledge of academic support strategies.

· Proficiency in providing academic assistance.

· Competence in using Microsoft Office and similar office technologies.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred:

· Familiarity with learning strategies and academic interventions.

· Skills in developing strategies for students needing additional support.

· Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

· Experience in advising or supporting first-year students.

· Excellent presentation and outreach capabilities.

Salary: $49,000, accompanied by a comprehensive university benefits package.
