Key Responsibilities
  • Execute all technical and administrative tasks necessary for the accurate processing of specimens and preparation of test results for reporting.
  • Conduct a diverse range of laboratory tests utilizing sophisticated automated systems.
  • Calibrate instruments and perform necessary preventive maintenance.
  • Adhere to documented procedures in standard operating manuals and test evaluations.
  • Carry out various hematology and microbiological tests, interpreting cellular and organismal data through microscopic techniques.
  • Prepare blood components, including splitting or pooling products as required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens

To qualify, candidates must meet the education and/or experience criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). All qualifying experience will be credited. Resumes must clearly articulate relevant experience; transcripts are required if qualifying based on education.

Basic Requirement: Medical Technician

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience in a clinical laboratory setting, performing a variety of testing procedures in areas such as specimen processing, hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, immunoassays, Blood Bank, and microbiological testing. This specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the position, such as medical technology, chemistry, or biology. NOTE: Transcripts must be attached for verification.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be utilized to qualify for this position, provided the total percentage of requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide total months of experience by 12 and total completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18, then add the two percentages.

AND

Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or other comparable board or registry as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is mandatory.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If using education from foreign institutions to meet qualification requirements, candidates must provide evaluation credentials from a recognized organization that assesses foreign education programs and confirms equivalency to U.S. accredited programs.
