Job Overview: The Lead Automation Engineer is essential in guaranteeing the seamless and effective functioning of manufacturing operations by providing automation expertise.

This role encompasses the implementation of change control protocols, investigating discrepancies, and offering both routine and emergency support for automation computer systems.

Moreover, the Lead Automation Engineer spearheads non-standard automation computer system support tasks and drives engineering projects to meet business objectives.

In addition, this position involves the design and installation of automated process machinery, facility systems, and software solutions. The engineer must possess troubleshooting skills and perform corrective maintenance on both facilities and production equipment.

The primary responsibility is to maintain automated electromechanical systems and software, which includes supporting facility upgrades, equipment installations, and maintenance tasks.

They are tasked with developing specifications for equipment and systems and coordinating their implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical automation support to manufacturing operations for DeltaV and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley control system platforms and associated operational technology process information systems.
  • Interpret and apply Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) documentation in a highly regulated setting, adhering to standards such as 21 CFR Part 11, ASTM 2500, S88, and S95.
  • Lead modernization initiatives to upgrade or replace outdated control systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers informally.
  • Conduct extensive data analysis to identify enhancements in manufacturing processes.
  • Design and implement automation-related modifications to manufacturing operations.
  • Investigate automation-related discrepancies.
  • Provide after-hours automation support to operations.
  • Ensure all work aligns with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and support all Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) corporate and site objectives.
  • Deliver engineering solutions to the business.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of new process units.
  • Provide project management and technical leadership for projects.
  • Supervise specialists and/or contractors involved in delivering automation solutions.
  • Ensure the development and execution of life-cycle plans for automation systems.
  • Recommend new control strategies and technologies.
  • Stay informed about various control strategies and technologies.
  • Maintain familiarity with pharmaceutical manufacturing practices.
  • Hands-on experience during project installation, startup, and ongoing support activities is essential.

Collaborate with all departments to enhance manufacturing operations and improve methods for automated data collection and reporting, as well as the overall reliability and performance of equipment and systems. This includes both existing systems and new installation projects. Maintain open communication across departments and management levels.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent technical experience with a minimum of 5 years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.

Experience with maintaining validation documentation.

Expertise in process control and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC/HMI/SCADA programming and hardware.

Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups within engineering and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external collaborators.

Experience with greenfield or large control system modernization projects.

Strong listening skills and the ability to articulate one's perspective respectfully in oral, written, and presentation formats.

Ability to work collaboratively with other engineers in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.

Possess interpersonal skills to negotiate and resolve differences.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage with internal and external personnel, providing timely information to prevent production delays.

This includes the timely, accurate, and neat completion of documentation, such as work orders and reports that meet GMP requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical background in the Pharmaceutical or similar GMP-regulated industry.
  • Experience with plant-wide Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC and Emerson DeltaV implementations.
  • Experience with Intellution iFIX SCADA systems.
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs and HMIs.
  • Familiarity with industrial networks and communication protocols (e.g., Modbus TCP/IP, OPC UA).
  • Understanding of network infrastructure and architecture, including segregation between IT and OT networks.
  • Experience with MS server administration and Active Directory.
  • Familiarity with VMWare or HyperV virtualization platforms.
