Compensation: $123,650 to $215,080, based on location.

Position Overview:

The Principal Engineer in the Treatment Group plays a crucial role in engaging with clients and team members on technical matters related to the planning and design of water and wastewater treatment projects, as well as recycled water systems. This position involves business development, proposal writing, and overseeing project work from initial planning through design and construction support.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong drive to elevate our capabilities by collaborating directly with clients and team members. This leadership role requires extensive experience in project delivery, client relationship management, and staff mentorship. The Principal Engineer will provide essential support to the Treatment Business Sector Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the engineering design process, including the preparation of reports, construction drawings, specifications, and calculations for various projects. Ensure compliance with engineering principles, firm standards, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.
  • Establish and maintain client relationships, develop proposals, and prepare project budgets. Conduct meetings with clients to define project scope and estimate staffing needs and fees.
  • Maintain ongoing client contact throughout the project lifecycle, fostering relationships through organizational involvement and direct communication.
  • Utilize technical expertise to create studies, reports, and designs for water and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Manage workload projections for all projects under your supervision and collaborate with other engineers and managers to balance staffing demands.
  • Advise senior management on staffing and resource needs, and allocate personnel effectively to optimize company workload.
  • Conduct technical reviews of staff reports, correspondence, and calculations, and prepare technical recommendations. Develop cost estimates for current and new designs, ensuring timely project delivery within scope and budget.
  • Act as Project Manager or team member on significant design and construction projects, overseeing progress, schedules, and budgets.
  • Mentor engineering staff on technical issues and serve as a technical resource.
  • Contribute to technical publications and conference presentations.
  • Ensure quality assurance for plans and contract documents related to construction improvements.
  • Determine client invoicing requirements and collaborate with accounting to prepare timely invoices.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in civil engineering consulting or engineering management.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills are essential.
  • PE licensure in California and/or Oregon, or the ability to obtain licensure within six months of hire. Licensure in other states where the firm operates may also be considered.
Travel Requirements:

This position may require travel to various offices and client locations. A valid driver's license is necessary, and candidates must meet the company's driving eligibility criteria.
