Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing instructional support to special education programs, including special day classes and interagency programs. The successful candidate will assist teachers and staff in developing and implementing programs, materials, and tests to enhance student learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with small groups and individual students on special subjects and exercises to execute individual lesson plans and strategies for maximizing learning experiences.
  • Prepare and develop age-grade appropriate instructional aids and exercises to support the curriculum being taught.
  • Assist special program administrators and teaching staff with preparation and presentation of in-service training sessions.
  • Confer with teachers, specialists, and parents to develop and evaluate individual and group educational goals and objectives.
  • Administer assessment instruments, score objective tests, and keep appropriate records for teachers.
  • Assist in training other instructional support specialists and school personnel to administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests.
  • Monitor classroom activities when a teacher is absent, accompany students, observe, monitor, and control behavior of students within approved procedures.
  • Develop and use incentives as positive reinforcement, exercise constant supervision of children, and assess the need for and use appropriate discipline.
  • Report student academic and behavior progress and performance to teachers, document student progress, and confer with teachers, resource staff, and other school personnel concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist special program administrative staff with preparation and presentation of in-service training sessions, prepare and maintain files and records for classroom or assigned program, and provide clerical and technical assistance to teachers.
  • Review teachers' schedules, initiate requests for equipment and resource materials, set up and operate audiovisual equipment, computers, and other equipment to assist and enhance instructional programs.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of students onto buses, supervise lunches and snacks, and assure safety of students following health and safety rules.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, 12 college credit hours that are degree eligible, passing of a competency exam, and two years of classroom experience working with children with special needs.
  • Specific experience in a special day class or similar environment may substitute for higher education requirements.
  • Incumbents having additional college coursework may use it to substitute for some experience.
  • Incumbents may be placed in a higher range based on completion of college credit hours.
