Gannett Fleming is seeking a skilled Principal Geotechnical Engineer to oversee both the technical and commercial facets of our operations. This role demands a high level of expertise in areas such as dam and levee safety, foundation engineering, seismic assessments—including the analysis of design ground motions and liquefaction risks—slope stability evaluations, and the formulation of recommendations for linear infrastructure initiatives. The position also encompasses general geotechnical engineering tasks related to hydropower projects, including penstocks, diversion structures, pipelines, headworks, gates, canals, flumes, levees, and siphons. Additionally, the role requires geotechnical assessments for landslide remediation and geological hazard management.

We have successfully completed over 1,000 subsurface and geophysical projects nationwide, ranging from small initiatives to large-scale dams, highways, bridges, and underground facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define project scope, resources, timelines, and budget for significant and complex assignments.
  • Lead the design and execution of major projects independently.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple large-scale projects with diverse teams and subcontractors.
  • Utilize extensive knowledge to evaluate, select, and implement appropriate techniques and analyses.
  • Provide construction support services, including assisting clients with bidding processes, conducting site observations, and managing project changes.
  • Review project documentation to ensure compliance and quality standards.
  • Engage in business development to expand our client base and identify new opportunities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for project acquisition and execution.
  • Foster and maintain client relationships, understanding their needs and managing expectations.
  • Lead and mentor technical staff to cultivate a high-performing team.
  • Innovate new methodologies and enhance existing processes.
  • Facilitate project meetings and present engineering aspects effectively.
  • Represent the organization in professional communications and conferences related to engineering projects.
  • Delegate tasks to junior consultants and technicians, ensuring effective supervision.
  • Train staff on specialized software and proprietary applications.
  • Assist senior management in executing business strategies and may oversee specific organizational programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Proven project management experience with multidisciplinary teams and client development.
  • Professional Engineering license in California or a state with comity.
  • Geotechnical Engineering license in California.
  • In-depth knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, particularly in foundation design, seismic hazard assessment, and slope stability analysis.
  • Familiarity with landslide stabilization techniques is advantageous.
  • Competence in preparing and reviewing reports, plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MS Office, and related software.
  • Experience with specialized analysis software (e.g., Flac, GeoStudio, Mathcad, etc.).
