California, United States Gannett Fleming Full time

Gannett Fleming is seeking a highly skilled Principal Geotechnical Engineer to oversee both the technical and business dimensions of our projects. This role requires extensive expertise in areas such as dam and levee safety, foundation engineering, seismic assessments—including the determination of design ground motions and liquefaction evaluations—slope stability analysis, and the formulation of recommendations for linear infrastructure initiatives. Additionally, the position encompasses general geotechnical engineering tasks related to hydropower facilities, including but not limited to penstocks, diversion structures, pipelines, headworks, gates, canals, flumes, levees, and siphons. Proficiency in geotechnical analysis for landslide remediation and geological hazard assessments is also essential.

Our team at Gannett Fleming is equipped with the profound knowledge necessary to tackle the most demanding geotechnical challenges. We pride ourselves on delivering innovative solutions for foundation design, underground construction, earth structures—including dams and levees—groundwater management, and complex building sites. Our experts also focus on issues such as landslides, sinkholes, mine subsidence, seepage, expansive soils, and seismic risks. We have successfully completed over 1,000 subsurface and geophysical projects nationwide, ranging from small initiatives to large-scale dams, highways, bridges, and underground facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define project scope, resource allocation, scheduling, and budget requirements for significant and complex assignments.
  • Independently design and lead major projects to successful completion.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple large-scale projects with interdisciplinary teams and subcontractors.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of engineering principles to evaluate, select, and implement appropriate techniques and analyses.
  • Provide construction support services, including assisting clients with bidding processes, conducting site observations, coordinating with contractors and inspectors, managing field modifications, and finalizing project closeouts.
  • Review project documentation to ensure compliance and quality assurance.
  • Engage in business development to cultivate a robust client portfolio, generate leads, and explore new market opportunities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for project acquisition and strategy.
  • Establish and maintain strong client relationships, understanding their needs and managing expectations effectively.
  • Lead and mentor technical staff to foster a high-performing team that consistently delivers exceptional results.
  • Innovate new techniques and enhance existing processes.
  • Facilitate project meetings and present engineering aspects to stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization in communications and conferences related to engineering projects.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise junior consultants and technicians.
  • Train staff on specialized software and proprietary applications.
  • Assist senior management in executing business initiatives and may oversee organizational programs under their guidance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Demonstrated project management experience within multidisciplinary teams, alongside business and client development skills.
  • Professional Engineering license in California or a state with comity.
  • Geotechnical Engineering license in California.
  • In-depth knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, particularly in foundation design, seismic hazard evaluation, and slope stability analysis.
  • Familiarity with landslide stabilization techniques is advantageous.
  • Competence in reviewing and preparing reports, plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MS Office, and similar software applications.
  • Experience with specialized analysis software (e.g., Flac, GeoStudio, Mathcad, etc.).
