Job Overview

Position Summary:

This newly established role at People's Food Co-op involves supporting various departments based on staffing requirements. The primary focus is on assisting with product procurement, preparing production task lists, managing inventory, and maintaining accurate records.

Daily Responsibilities:

The core objective of this position is to provide assistance across departments as needed. You may find yourself engaged in multiple areas within a single day. This role is integral to our grocery team and reports directly to the Grocery Manager. Key responsibilities include:

  • Engaging with department managers regarding daily operations, requirements, and challenges.
  • Reporting performance-related issues to department managers in a timely, respectful, and consistent manner.
  • Fostering effective and respectful communication with all staff to promote a constructive work environment.
  • Assisting department managers with product ordering, receiving shipments, and pricing strategies.
  • Identifying and resolving errors and potential issues within the department.
  • Supporting the training of department personnel.
  • Ensuring all staff are informed of any updates to policies and procedures.
  • Guaranteeing that department staff respond to phone inquiries and customer requests in a professional manner.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of products and presentation techniques, as well as quality standards.
  • Ensuring cleanliness in department cases and preparation areas.
  • Receiving product deliveries while verifying order accuracy and product quality.
  • Preparing various meat department items as required.
  • Organizing back stock areas according to departmental standards.
  • Staying informed about current promotional events relevant to the department.
  • Adhering to and enforcing all food safety, sanitation, and safety regulations as per company and health code guidelines; identifying unsafe conditions and notifying management.
  • Interacting with customers and addressing inquiries in a prompt manner.
  • Welcoming customers warmly throughout the store and assisting them with product location, heavy item handling, and retrieving items from high shelves.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in a grocery department is preferred.
  • Prior experience with inventory management and ordering processes.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, safety, and customer service.
  • Effective communication and listening abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate well with others in a team-oriented environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to frequently lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 60 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching is required. Also, tasks may involve cutting with a knife or box cutter.
  • Occasional use of a baler and trash compactor.
