Position Title:
School Counselor

Overview of Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the principal or designated authority, the School Counselor is expected to implement a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework to engage with all stakeholders in creating a cohesive system of coordinated support services that enhances student well-being and academic achievement.


Core Responsibilities

1. Maintain a schedule for the wellness center that includes open hours, partnerships with community organizations, interns, and other staffing to ensure a consistent presence at the school site and/or Wellness Center.

2. Facilitate and/or engage in school multidisciplinary teams.

3. Track and monitor student referrals.

4. Coordinate and deliver individual counseling, support groups, wellness services, crisis intervention, and connections to community resources.

5. Conduct risk assessments as necessary and provide appropriate follow-up.

6. Manage cases for Foster Youth, McKinney Vento Students, and Court-involved students.

7. Collaborate with student-led councils/committees to gather student feedback on the implementation of mental health and wellness services.

8. Fulfill all supervisory responsibilities for interns, providing guidance and direction to BSW, MSW, and MFT level interns.

9. Offer training and workshops for students, families, and staff on mental health and wellness topics (e.g., Trauma-informed practices, Restorative Justice Practices, Suicide Prevention and Intervention, etc.).

10. Provide parents/guardians with advice and education on addressing significant physical, emotional, and psychological developmental changes in students.

11. Collaborate with staff and partners to promote student success and address equity gaps, aiming to reduce chronic absenteeism and suspension/expulsion rates.

12. Participate in Special Education Teams, Student Study Teams, attendance-related meetings, and other school/district leadership teams as appropriate.

13. Organize school-wide events and initiatives with students to foster a positive school climate and culture.

14. Work with the administrative team to identify and develop supportive activities to address challenges affecting students' behavioral, socio-emotional, and academic growth.

15. Maintain records to document activities and comply with mandated requirements, including case management records.

16. Ensure confidentiality of information to meet privacy standards.

17. Prepare reports, documents, and other written materials.

18. Document student interactions and activities using case management software.

19. Monitor student utilization data for wellness providers.

20. Complete necessary documentation for billing.

21. Perform other duties as assigned.

1. Knowledge of equity and culturally relevant best practices and competencies.

2. Ability to remain composed under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and oversee daily operations of the Wellness Center while addressing the needs of high school students.

3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

4. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, tailored for various audiences (e.g., parents, students, staff, and community partners).

5. Understanding of trauma-informed care and the ability to work with diverse populations.

6. Demonstrated initiative and self-directed leadership within the Wellness Center.

7. Ability to integrate services within the school community.

8. Ability to collaborate effectively with administrators and other staff.

9. Knowledge of record-keeping and report preparation techniques.

10. Familiarity with applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the scope of work.

11. Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development patterns of students.

12. Knowledge of counseling theories, ethics, and legal confidentiality requirements.

13. Awareness of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of district students.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW).

2. Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Valid License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

2. At least two years of post-MSW social work field instruction experience.

3. Bilingual candidates preferred.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW).

Must possess a current Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work.

Preferred Qualifications:
Hold a valid Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).

Possess at least two years of post-MSW social work field instruction experience.

Comments and Other Information

Newly hired unit members will receive full credit for relevant prior verified contractual experience.

Bilingual candidates preferred.
