Through grassroots organizing, we empower leaders to demand the enforcement of robust labor laws and accountability from employers and brands in the fashion industry. Our focus is on supporting immigrant workers, women of color, and their families who face exploitation.

Role Description: The Garment Worker Center is seeking a committed and community-oriented Legal Support Specialist to join our expanding Legal Clinic. This role involves assisting Staff Attorneys in delivering legal support and direct representation to garment workers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Staff Attorneys with calculations related to wages and damages.
  • Conduct research on defendants, including employers and fashion brands, as well as asset investigations.
  • Prepare templates for legal pleadings and other case-related documents.
  • Organize and manage case files and evidence.
  • Translate documents between English and Spanish, or coordinate with certified translators as necessary.
  • Support Staff Attorneys in submitting evidence and required documentation to relevant labor authorities.
  • Assist in the preparation of files for settlement discussions and hearings.
  • Participate in clinics and conduct client intake as needed.
  • Accompany Staff Attorneys to settlement discussions and hearings when required.

Qualifications:

  • Paralegal Certificate, Bachelor's degree with at least one year of experience under a licensed attorney, or a high school diploma with three years of relevant experience.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical abilities, with a preference for experience in corporate research.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools such as Lexis Nexis or Westlaw.
  • Experience with trauma-informed interviewing techniques is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice.
  • Familiarity with the garment industry is advantageous but not essential.
  • Self-driven, capable of prioritizing tasks and working collaboratively.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of Zapotec or Mayan dialects is a plus but not required.

Compensation:

  • Salary: $60,000
