Fayetteville Public Library Genealogy Services Librarian

Role Summary

This position is non-exempt and falls under the Adult Services department, reporting directly to the Manager of Adult Services. The role is centered around providing exceptional service and support to patrons seeking genealogy and local history resources.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Welcome patrons warmly and foster a friendly atmosphere, engaging them in discussions about library offerings and services. Deliver outstanding customer service in the genealogy and reference sections, addressing inquiries about library programs and directing patrons to the appropriate resources.
  2. Communicate effectively with patrons on various topics, including library services, policies, and expectations. Utilize creativity and problem-solving skills to enhance the customer experience, manage challenging situations, and address patron concerns while ensuring safety.
  3. Conduct thorough assessments of patron needs through open-ended inquiries, tailoring responses to provide suitable recommendations based on institutional knowledge. Offer advanced assistance in genealogy and local history research, as well as technical support.
  4. Perform detailed genealogy and local history research for patrons and the library as required. Provide training on genealogy research tools and resources in both group and individual settings.
  5. Assist in onboarding new staff members, facilitating their integration into the library environment. Train volunteers and provide support to colleagues as needed.
  6. Design, implement, and evaluate a variety of engaging genealogy programs and workshops. Manage a departmental programming budget and contribute to the execution of numerous community programs annually.
  7. Assess program effectiveness, ensuring alignment with community interests and accessibility. Gather and consider patron feedback for program development.
  8. Support the planning and execution of large-scale library events, demonstrating flexibility in work hours to accommodate these initiatives.
  9. Manage digital content and marketing materials, ensuring accurate communication of library events and services. Maintain an organized online calendar of events.
  10. Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, and nonprofits.
  11. Review library collections and donations for relevance and community interest, recommending acquisitions to enhance the library's offerings.
  12. Oversee specialized Adult Services activities, including genealogy and statistical reporting.
  13. Create informative bibliographies and user guides to highlight library resources and programs.
  14. Participate in library committees as requested.
  15. Exhibit strong time management and organizational skills, balancing multiple tasks efficiently.
  16. Engage with diverse audiences in library programs, promoting library services and fostering community connections.
  17. Pursue ongoing professional development to stay informed about library trends and best practices.
  18. Take responsibility for maintaining the library's environment and addressing minor issues as they arise.
  19. Complete assigned special projects and monitor library spaces for safety and security.
  20. Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized training or experience equivalent to a four-year degree, along with 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to analyze and interpret professional materials.
  3. Basic mathematical proficiency.
  4. Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to interpret various instructions.
  5. Intermediate computer skills, including proficiency in office software.
  6. Exceptional customer service skills, particularly in resolving challenging situations.
